Cannondale Fat CAAD 1 Mountain Bike 2017 - Hardtail MTB
No one has ever complained about having too much rubber in their life. Cannondale’s Fat CAAD1 mountain bike is a cheeky chunky monkey that will leave you giggling like a school child on a day trip to the zoo.
It may be fat, but it sure can dance! Cannondale are among the world leaders in aluminium wizardry, and the fat CAAD takes full advantage of that. The SmartFormed C1 alloy keeps the bike light, while the SAVE micro-suspension technology gives it just a little bit of controlled vertical flex in the rear triangle, taking the sting out of any rough terrain.
Cannondale’s own SI crankset uses custom chainring offsets to make sure the extra width of the Fat CAAD doesn’t leave it with an uncomfortable Q-factor. The frame & fork are also designed with a long front centre and a short trail, giving the bike outstanding high speed stability, with fast-response steering for low-speed agility.
Talking of the fork, let me introduce you to Olaf, the 100mm travel Lefty with a big heart and soul. Cannondale’s Lefty uses needle roller bearings for a super-smooth motion, which also gives the it incredibly stiffness which matches and surpasses traditional forks. The Fat CAAD’s Olaf has been designed specifically to work in conjunction with the big balloon tyres, absorbing everything the trail can throw at you.
Those enormous tyres are 26x4.8 inch wide Schwalbe Jumbo Jim’s, with snakeskin puncture protection. They’re just at home floating along on top of the snow as they are kicking up the dirt and ironing out the braking ruts on your favourite mountain bike trail.
The Fat CAAD 1 gets a 1x11 speed drivetrain courtesy of SRAM’s X01 set. Gearchanges are quick, crisp and you get a wide range of ratios to suit any terrain. Massive tyres mean massive grip, and the SRAM Guide hydraulic disc brakes have plenty of power, making sure you can use all the available grip when you want it.

* Mountain bikes are sized differently to road bikes. Typically, they are sized in inches as the first MTBs were produced in the USA. European brands like Lapierre and Haibike like to use centimetres for all their bikes. The measurements of their mountain bikes doesn’t match their road bikes but are like a simple conversion from the inches measurement. This is why we have included cm measurements in brackets for the Mountain bike column.
