    Tight fit

I previously had this helmet and after 4 years the chin strap just snapped, it was one of those plastic clip in type fastenings so, I ordered the same helmet online from Tredz, my old helmet was large 59-63 cm on the inner label so I measured my head, 60cm...went with large again. Helmet took 5 days to arrive from ordering to delivery. Came in a sturdy box, was in excellent condition and fully assembled. First thing I noticed was the super tight fit of the cheek pads, there's barely room to fit my head into the helmet, the pads squeezed my face and gave me a pounding headache in about 15 minutes. My mouth was squashed and I felt like my head was going to explode. I removed the cheek pads, wrapped elastic bands around the fatter parts and refitted them, perfect fit...almost. The pads are just too thick, 4cm compared to my old helmet of 2.5cm. (Each side) Next thing is the chin strap, not the easy clip on buckle of old but a d ring, awkward to thread the nylon strap through the twin d rings then loop it around and through one ring then loop it back and secure the loose end to a button press stud. Just a clumsy system and the instructions said to make it secure almost to where it becomes uncomfortable, well, I did that and added to the pounding headache I was now feeling nauseas from the strap pressing my throat. So I stopped fastening the strap and did the elastic band thing on the cheek pads and it was wearable. But still very firm fit to the head which is fine, feels secure even without strap. If the pads were thinner and the chin strap a better design this would be a brilliant helmet, but they are not so, if going for a large, I would recommend you get XL instead. I had to wear this because of my job and my old helmet was not secure with the broken chinstrap, as such I invalidated the return policy so I have to live with it. It is still tight even with the pads compressed by elastic bands and the strap unfastened and after a few miles my head does feel like it is squeezed in a vice but at £142 the helmet itself is sturdy, good quality, the vents are well positioned, I actually feel the draft now on my forehead that my old Giro did not have, I just wished they had thinner cheek pads and I hate the d ring chinstrap.
