What are cycling shoes?
Cycling shoes are designed to make standing on pedals easier. Some have cleats attached to the bottom – clips that allow you to attach yourself mechanically to the pedals for better efficiency. Others simply have stiffer, firmer, grippier soles, to make cycling on flat pedals easier.
Who needs cycling shoes?
If you ride on flat pedals, you don’t have to use cycling shoes, but they do make things easier and more comfortable. If you ride on clipless pedals, you will need proper cycling shoes to go with them.
What are the choices?
Other than flat shoes, cycling shoes come in two varieties – clipless road and clipless mountain bike. Confusingly, clipless shoes are the type with cleats that allow you to clip in to your pedals. Clipless MTB shoes have holes in the sole to fit a two bolt cleat, such as SPD; clipless road shoes have three bolt holes in the sole for a clipless road cleat, such as SPD-SL or Look.
What should I buy with them?
To use clipless shoes you’ll need the right clipless pedals. Also, be aware that cycling shoes don’t usually include cleats, although the pedals usually do.
Clipless shoes and pedals can look daunting, but they are well worth getting used to. After a few weeks riding clipless, you’ll wonder how you ever managed without.
