Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper FSR 650b Mountain Bike 2016 - Trail Full Suspension MTB
The Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper FSR is the ultimate long-travel trail bike. It is a no expense spared machine ready to eat up any trail you throw at it. This Stumpy is at home on the most technically demanding trails in a trail centre.
All new for 2016 the S-Works has been built from the ground up to fit the new 650b wheel size. A slacker head angle, short chainstays and 150mm travel among the key differences.
FACT Carbon frame
At the heart of the S-Works Stumpy is a FACT 10m carbon composite front fork and M5 alloy rear. The combination makes for a super light, durable and stiff (where it needs to be) frame, for exceptional ride characteristics. It expertly balances between uphill efficiency and downhill stability while remaining light and nimble.
Specialized have redesigned the frame for all-round improvements. A slacker 67 degree head angle (68 degree in 2015) improves stability at speed, when you’re tearing down a trail centre.
Short 420mm chainstays tuck the rear end in and improve nimble riding. The low bottom bracket height has been maintained giving you a lower centre of gravity.
SWAT
Also new for 2016 is SWAT door storage for your trail essentials. A space has been built into the downtube which is big enough to fit a spare inner tube, pump and CO2 cartridges. A bottle cage mounted to the door means that on shorter hacks you may not need to wear a backpack.
Storing essentials in the frame creates a lower centre of gravity, and it’s more comfortable to ride with a lighter pack - or none at all. There is no rattling as you ride and frame integrity hasn’t been compromised to include the feature.
Internal cable routing keeps your cable protected, and reduces the amount of maintenance you’ll need to do on them. A 12mm bolt through rear axle gives you a stiff rear end, and a 15mm axle on the fork improves steering precision.
The IRcc 125mm (100mm size small) command dropper post can be adjusted on the fly. You can set the right saddle height for the section of trail that you’re riding.
RockShox Pike RC3
Both the fork and shock are top of the range versions. The RockShox Pike RC3 fork is stiff, light and plush with great small and big hit performance. It is one of the best forks on the market and comes with a 2 stage compression adjust for the ultimate tunability.
Fox Factory shock
The Factory version of the FOX CTD shock is a high spec item. A boost valve improves performance when the trail gets rowdy. A Kashima coating also gives a slicker feel and improves overall durability.
This Stumpy gets its name from the FSR suspension that it uses. The 4 bar linkage system with a second pivot on the chainstay, near the rear axle, allows the back wheel to move in a linear path. It’s one of the most effective suspension systems around, and works independently of pedalling or braking forces.
Chain tension isn’t affected and there is no pedal kickback or pedal induced bob. The result is a solid full-suss that can climb well and descend in a controlled and stable way. Sealed cartridge bearings on all pivot points are smooth and easy to service.
RX trail tune on the rear sus means that every shock has the volume, compression and rebound range tuned for each Stumpy. You don’t get this from every manufacturer.
SRAM XX1
No corners are cut on the S-Works. SRAM’s top of the line XX1 1x11 drivetrain gives you plenty of gearing for taking on a range of terrain. Shifting performance is super slick and extremely reliable. S-Works Carbon cranks are strong and lightweight.
XTR disc brakes
Shimano’s XTR hydraulic disc brakes are one of the best (if not the best) there is. They’re very powerful with great modulation and feel. Ice Tech pads provide excellent cooling on those longer descents.
Roval Traverse fattie wheels with carbon rims are lighter and stiffer than alloy for all round performance improvements. They’re also tubeless ready.
The S-Works Stumpjumper FSR is lean, mean trail eating machine designed to give you the most out of your ride. Nimble on the climbs, and controlled on the descents. There are few long-travel trail bikes that can compete.
