Shorts Guide

What are cycling shorts?

Cycling shorts are designed to make you more comfortable on the bike. This can mean Lycra shorts that reduce chafing and add a layer of padding where it’s needed, or baggy shorts for off road and leisure, which use technical fabrics and are cut for comfort when in the riding position.

Who needs cycling shorts?

All cyclists can benefit from cycling shorts, even if they only ride a short distance. They add a lot of comfort plus a degree of weather protection, and you’ll be able to move more freely.

What are the choices?

Put simply: Lycra or baggies. Baggy shorts are great for a casual look and have loads of practical pockets for carrying extra kit. Lycra shorts are tremendously comfortable, allowing full freedom of movement and often having a chamois or pad in the crotch to protect you from saddle soreness. It’s also fine to wear both – Lycra shorts with something looser over the top. Bibshorts are another variety of Lycra shorts, with shoulder stirrups to prevent waist chafing and keep them firmly in place.

What should I buy with them?

No matter how good your shorts and your saddle are, sometimes cyclists suffer chafing. Chamois cream is a soothing lubricant balm that will put paid to this.

Anything else?

You can get the most out of your shorts with a pair of legwarmers or knee warmers, allowing you to wear them through chillier weather in spring and autumn.
