Product Description

The SLR range are perfect all-round road bikes. They feature a lightweight frame design and carbon lay up which offers a fantastic blend of power transfer and comfort and has been aero-optimised to deliver race winning speed. This is combined with a geometry which encourages long days exploring without sitting up tall in the wind. The SLR 9.2 features a subtle grey to silver paint fade, making the bike look as good as it feels to ride.

FRAMESET:

In most situations, aerodynamic drag limits a rider’s speed rather than fighting gravity. The SLR frameset is optimised for aerodynamic performance without adding weight or compromising the ride quality. Our wind-tunnel proven tube profiles minimise separation of airflow, resulting in lower aerodynamic drag.

The SLR’s geometry strikes a balance between a long and low race position and an upright, endurance set up. The frame itself has been designed with comfort in mind to. Thin, dropped seat stays and a slim legged fork absorb road imperfections without compromising on the lateral stiffness required to corner quickly and confidently.

The SLR focusses on efficiency. Using our C10 carbon fibre blend, high-modulus fibres are used in key areas to increase the strength to weight ratio. Deep, box-section chainstays, an oversized bottom bracket and dropped seat stays combine in a compact, stiff rear triangle, maximising power transfer.

With 28mm tyres and hidden mudguard mounts, the SLR 9 Series bikes are also practical for year-round riding too.

COMPONENTS:

The SLR 9.2 features Shimano’s smooth-shifting R8000 series Ultegra. Ergonomically shaped levers give light-touch gear changes, and hydraulic disc brakes give fingertip control, with plenty of power on tap if needed. Featuring plenty of trickle-down technology from their flagship Dura Ace groupset, Ultegra offers all the performance you could need from a mechanical groupset. A 50/34t compact chainset combined with a 11-30t cassette offers a broad range of gears to cover off steep climbing, flat land sprinting and fast descending.

Wheels and tyres make a huge difference to how a bike feels to ride, and Alexrims RXD3 wheels are real high-performers. A 30mm deep rim with 19mm internal width supports the tyre and provides an aerodynamic advantage, with bladed, double butted spokes providing an additional boost. Thru-axle hubs with sealed cartridge bearings keep friction low, and at a weight of only 1550g for a pair, they deliver snappy acceleration and climbing performance. They’re also tubeless ready if you want to upgrade down the line. Tyres are Vittoria’s high-quality Rubino Pro Graphene 2.0 in 28mm width, which combine grip, low rolling resistance and puncture protection as a high-quality all round package.

CONTACT POINTS:

Working with Chris Boardman, data from hundreds of bike fits and insight from bike fit experts, we have made simple changes to the contact points of the SLR range. Using advanced pressure mapping and real-world testing we’ve shown that the Boardman SLR saddle will provide long-ride comfort for the majority of people. Bar width and crank length are also reduced vs previous bikes to make sure they are suited to the fit needs of real cyclists, not just based on old traditions. These changes also reduce the rider’s frontal area, which has been wind tunnel tested to reduce drag, meaning less effort required for the same speed.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Shimano Ultegra R8000 series groupset
  • Compact 50/34 chainset with 11-30 cassette
  • 28mm Vittoria Rubino Pro Graphene 2.0 tyres
  • Alexrims RXD3 Wheels are outstanding performers – 30mm deep rim ,1550g weight
  • Hidden mudguard mounts make the SLR 9.2 usable all year round

Occasionally, without notice, manufacturers change product design and/or specifications.

Enduring perfection.
by Anonymous user on 25/11/2020

After 7 years it was time to upgrade my trusted Scott Speedster, and boy am I glad I did. The best way I can describe it is like a turbo-charged, featherweight limousine. Namely, it’s stiff, fast and comfortable - all in a great looking package. You fly when out the saddle. The Ultegra is a dream. The wide tyres give loads of grip. The disc breaks help you feel so confident going downhill. I couldn’t ask for more for the money. Even the colour, it says white... but in reality it’s sterling silver. Tredz we’re perfect as well. But it.

Frame Material

The vast majority of road bikes are made from either aluminium alloy or carbon fibre. Alloy bikes can offer higher tier groupsets for a lower price, whereas carbon frames come at a significant premium, but are lighter and give that extra performance advantage.

Aluminium

Aluminium alloy frames
Alloy frames have come a long way recently, using hydroforming and butting to keep the weight low, while keeping stiffness high.

Carbon fibre

Carbon fibre composite frames
Carbon frames have a lighter weight and greater stiffness, while maintaining excellent comfort.

Fork

Road bike forks are made to be lightweight and stiff, giving accurate steering, as well as a comfortable ride. Budget road bikes will have alloy forks, whereas mid-range forks often have mix-material forks, with alloy steerer tubes and carbon fork blades. Carbon bladed forks deliver a more comfortable ride, absorbing road vibrations and flexing slightly in rough roads. Full carbon forks are found on high end road bikes. They are especially lightweight and offer even greater stiffness.

Groupset

A bike’s groupset, or drivetrain, is where the biggest difference in component quality is seen. A complete groupset comprises of the following parts:

  • Chainset (aka Crankset)
  • Bottom bracket
  • Brakes
  • Brake levers
  • Shifters
  • Front & rear derailleur
  • Chain
  • Cassette

Road groupsets are supplied by Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo. Having reliable and fast shifting can make all the difference when pushing hard. The majority of road bikes have double chainring drivetrains, while triple chainring setups are usually only found on low end bikes and touring bikes. Road bikes will have 7-12 speeds in the rear, with higher gears meaning more options for smoother riding.

Brakes

Disc Brakes

Disc brakes
Disc brakes offer greater stopping power and modulation. They work as well in wet as dry weather, and don’t require the rims to be replaced periodically. They come at a weight penalty, however.

Calliper Rim Brakes

Calliper rim brakes
Rim brakes are lightweight and easy to maintain. They allow greater aerodynamics for aero road bikes and

Wheels & Tyres

Types of tyres

Road bikes tyres don’t vary as much as mountain bike or even hybrid, but they still make a huge difference to how the bike rides. For a detailed look into road bike tyres, see our guide.

Road tyres have long been offered as either clincher or tubular. Clincher tyres are the standard tyres that fit onto standard rims with a tube holding the air. Tubular tyres are glued to a special tubular rim and are fully encased, doing without a tube.

Tubeless tyres are now a feature of road bikes, delivering a compromise between tubular and clincher tyres. They look the same as clincher tyres, but pair up with special rims to offer a proper seal within the tyres, also doing away with tubes.

Tyre Size

Road tyres are traditionally quite narrow. Nowadays the accepted standard is 25c, but 23c and 28c tyres are very common too. The larger the size tyre, the more comfortable they will be, but they will also be heavier and potentially slower rolling. Sportive and flat bar road bikes will commonly have wider tyres, whereas race and aero road bike will tend towards narrower tyres.
