Product Description

The CamelBak M.U.L.E hydration pack is the brand’s bestselling, longest-running pack: it has got everything you need on the trails. M.U.L.E has a streamlined design that keeps it light and manoeuvrable, so even when it’s fully loaded for a day of mountain biking, it won’t get in your way.

This new edition is built around the latest Crux reservoir, which is very easy to load and refill. It also delivers more water with every sip to quench your thirst on dusty rides.

Delivering hydration since 1996

Since we launched the first M.U.L.E. in 1996, mountain bikers have been telling us that it hits the sweet spot of size vs. storage: it’s lightweight but big enough to carry three litres of water and a day’s worth of snacks and gear.

Over the years, we’ve also added air channels to keep your back cool, universal helmet hooks, and clever compartments for stashing tools, keys and electronics. The latest version also features a magnetic tube trap that snaps easily into place, so you can hydrate without taking your eyes off the trail.

Key Features:

  • The brand new Crux delivers 20% more water per sip, with an ergonomic handle for easier refilling, and an on/off lever that makes it easy to prevent leaks.
  • Magnetic Tube Trap keeps your tube secure and accessible when you need it.

A nice hydration pack...even nicer as it was complimentary with my new bike. The 3 litre bladder and drinking tube are excellent, easy to drink from and easy to clean. The bag is well made and has pockets for tools and things. It's great for a day on the trails with room for a waterproof and sandwiches. The pack is 12 litre so the 3 litre bladder means there is 9 litres of storage space. For longer rides in more remote areas I could do with some more space and it's a tad too small for commuting to work. I think the bladder is the top feature of this pack. I don't know if I'd be prepared to pay over £100 for one though.... if I was looking for a hydration pack I'd definitely get the bladder though.

Hydration Packs Guide

Do I need a hydration backpack?

If you ride your mountain bike on off-road trails, then you will want to take some fluid with you. While many MTBs have bottle cages if you want more than 750ml of then you will need a hydration backpack. They are also useful for carrying extra clothing, tools and food.

How much fluid can I carry?

Hydration backpacks are supplied with a 1.5, 2 or 3 litre bladder to carry fluid. A larger bladder will enable you to choose how much you carry with you on specific rides as you don’t need to use the whole capacity. A hose with a mouthpiece and tap allows you to drink while you ride.

How much kit can I carry in a hydration backpack?

This very much depends on the model - a classic CamelBak will only have room for a trail tool and thin layer while an alpine style pack will have room for tools, spares, food waterproofs and post ride clothing. In addition to this some hydration packs have compression straps that allow you to vary the capacity and carry straps for carrying extra kit, like body armour.

What size hydration pack do I need?

This will depend on the type and length of ride.

  • Up to 5 litres – short rides with minimal kit
  • 6–12 litres – all day rides carrying extra layers, food and trail tools
  • 13-25 litres – all day and multi-day rides carrying extra layers, food, tools, spares and post ride clothing

Can I ride technical terrain with a hydration pack?

While all our hydration packs are designed for serious off-roading some are more suited to riding steep technical terrain. Look for a pack with a horizontal or lumbar bladder and a substantial waist strap for riding more challenging, enduro style trails. as these offer a lower centre of gravity for increased stability.

Can I use a hydration pack for commuting?

Many hydration packs feature reflective strips and a tab for a rear light so make a great commuting packs too.

Are the hydration bladders easy to clean?

Yes, hydration pack bladders tend to have a wide opening so you can easily get your hand inside to give them a good clean.
