Cycle to Work

Product Description

An e-road bike that's built to fly.Hills flatten. Headwinds vanish. Speed prevails. This is everything you love about road riding - amplified.

Key Features:

  • The Speed of Light. This is a machine built for speed. Aerodynamically efficient design, sleek integration and BallisTec carbon construction keep the drag low, the weight minimal and the velocity high.
  • Invisible Assist. A lightweight motor in the rear hub and small battery in the frame provide the perfect amount of boost to enhance your ride, not overwhelm it. It's real road riding, made better.
  • Swift and Sure. Racy geometry and stiffness for explosive speed. Refined micro-suspension and big tire clearance for surprising smoothness. It all adds up to precise handling and a ride-feel that’s out of sight.

The Boost: The Mahle ebikemotion drive system uses a lightweight 250W rear hub motor and hidden 250Wh battery to provide three levels of "just-right" support. It's there when you need it, nearly imperceptible when you don't.

Speed Shapes: The frame features highly truncated airfoil tube shapes that offer the same weight, and equal or better stiffness, than round tubes, but reduce drag by up to 30%.

Intuitive Controller: The integrated top tube controller lets you turn the system on, select your assist level and see your battery charge, all at the touch of a button, keeping your bars clean and uncluttered.

Smooth Operator: SAVE micro-suspension delivers an elegantly smooth ride. The low seat stays, integrated seat binder and KNØT 27 seatpost work in unison to absorb bumps, improve comfort and enhance control.

Connected: An integrated wheel sensor on the EVO Neo 1 delivers hyper accurate speed, route and distance info, registers your bike, reminds you of needed service and more, all through the free Cannondale App.

HollowGram SAVE SystemBar: This sleek, integrated handlebar system reduces drag and absorbs shock for more speed and better comfort. The two-piece design offers interchangeability and pitch adjust to fine tune your position.

Clearly Capable: The frame is designed to accept larger-volume road tires (28mm tires fit with a full 6mm of clearance on all sides) for extra comfort and capability on all kinds of roads.

Hidden Cable Routing: Unique design routes brake lines through an opening in the front of the headtube for minimal drag and headache-free serviceability.

BallisTec Carbon: Cannondale's proprietary high-strength, high-stiffness carbon construction. An advanced matrix of intermediate modulus fibers creates a frame that's light, durable and lively.

Occasionally, without notice, manufacturers change product design and/or specifications.

Electric Road Bike Guide

Electric Road Bike Guide

Is an Electric Road Bike Right for Me?

If you are new to the world of cycling and ebikes, our electric bike buyers guide will give you a good overview of the different types of e bikes. This will help you decide if an electric road bike is right for you.

The best electric bikes for road cycling combine a powerful motor with good road bike platform. When choosing a road e bike, there are a few things that can help you decide which performance characteristics you can expect from a particular model.

How do E Bikes Work?

All our ebikes are pedal assist models. This means that the electric motor adds to your natural pedalling power, making it easier to ride. The effect is seamless, and you will feel the extra boost from the first pedal stroke. The harder you pedal the more the power the motor gives you. When you stop pedalling the motor stops too.

You can vary the amount of power that the drive unit delivers when you pedal. All you need to do is select one of the different power modes using the display unit or power button. Some e bikes allow you to customize these modes through a smart phone app that connects to the bike through Bluetooth.

Road cyclist on an electric road bike

By law all pedal assist ebike are limited to only offer assistance up to 15.5mph. This means that you can ride an ebike everywhere that you can ride a regular bike. You can of course ride faster, but you will have to rely solely on your own natural pedalling power at speeds over 15.5mph.

Are the motors different?

Hub drive motors

Hub drive motors sit inside the wheel hub. These motors are lighter weight than crank drive units but are less powerful, and the power is applied more subtly. You still get enough power to climb the hills and accelerate from a standing start easily, and once up to speed these bikes are easier to pedal. Because they produce less power, hub drive ebikes tend to have smaller battery packs that can be hidden in the frame more easily.

Crank drive motors

Crank drives use a more powerful motor that sits in the bottom bracket area of the bike. The power is added directly to the drivetrain through the cranks. The added power is much more noticeable on a crank drive bike and you will be able to power up the climbs like a Pro athlete. Of course, you can always turn down the amount of power that the motor delivers. This means that you can extend the range and take advantage of the larger battery packs that these bikes are equipped with. Specialist road bike crank drive motors like the Specialized Turbo SL are designed to offer just the right amount of power. These are smaller and lighter than crank drives that are designed for multiple platforms.

Batteries

Most e bikes use a lithium Ion battery pack. These hold plenty of charge, offer long lasting performance and are quick to charge. The capacity of the battery varies depending on the model. Battery capacity starts at 250Wh for hub drive bikes and goes up to 500Wh or more on high-end crank drive bikes. The batteries can usually be charged both on and off the bike. A 500Wh battery pack will usually take about 4 hours to fully charge.

Display and Connectivity

All ebikes have some type of display that allows you to swap between the different power modes. On some bikes the display is minimal with LED lights to show the remaining battery capacity and power modes. Others have screen that show additional ride data as well. The very best displays act like a high-end cycling computer.

Bosch Kiox display on an electric MTB

As well as the display unit many ebikes can also connect to a compatible smartphone app via Bluetooth. This opens up other options which may include GPS route planning and fine tuning of the power modes.

Which type of electric road bike is best for me?

Compared to mountain bikes road bikes have high cruising speeds. This means that the 15mph power assist limit needs more consideration with road e bikes. While a very powerful motor is great for getting up to speed and flying up the climbs you may find that the extra weight of a big motor and battery pack hold you back on the flat.

Hub drive road e bikes and lightweight crank drives like the Specialized Turbo SL are the best choice if you want the bike to feel similar to a regular road bike once you exceed the 15mph limit. These motors won’t get you up the climbs quite as fast as on a more powerful e bike, so if superfast climbing is your goal an e road bike with a more powerful crank drive motor might be best for you.
