Update: I’ve had these since October and have used them almost every day on my cube axial bike. The clip on the front mudguard snapped within a month or two and now has totally broken off on a ride at the point where it screw into the fork. They are very cheap plastic and if it weren’t for the perfect fit I wouldn’t have bothered with them. I don’t expect mudguards to last forever but surely they should be able to last the winter?

Expected better from Cube

I have just spent quite a few hours fitting these mudguards. I would like to reiterate what other reviewers have said. The instructions are rubbish, very small and unclear, it came down to getting the general idea and then trial and error. There wasn't a 25mm bolt for the bridge so had to source one. The sticky pads on the bridge are also rubbish and slide off when the bridge is tightened. I found it impossible to use a torque wrench on some of the bolts. For such a great bike these do not do it justice.

Cube be better

Instructions are poor in that the pictures are small and difficult to see detail of orientation of parts. Text is very small, almost needing a magnifying glass to read. Worst of all, the bolts they supply don't all correspond to the instructions. To fix the 'bridge' to the seat stays requires a 25mm bolt, but they didn't include this with the product! A real pain as I now have to find one that's suitable. Cube customer services have so far failed to respond to my email about this. Otherwise not too bad to fit, seem OK quality and will do a good job when needed. But come on Cube, at least supply the right parts to fit the product!

Cube Guards

Bit of a fiddle to put on, couldn't read the instructions as the writing was so tiny, I'm sure they'll perform perfectly as they were made for the bike, it'll be dry for ages now.

Good Mudguards, bad instructions

The mudguards once fitted are excellent and should be as they are designed for the bike and don't look too bad either. If you follow the instructions you will find that the screws supplied don not match the instructions. In particular the one between the seat stays requests a 25mm screw, there isn't one only a 20mm screw which isn't long enough so you need to get one from elsewhere. Don't bother with the torque settings especially the one between the seat stays as it will be far too tight, I got to 3Nm (instructions 5Nm) and it was about to break and the rubber patches just squeezed out. To hold them in place I wrapped them in insulating tape. But once fitted all seems great and they look OK, for mudguards!

Look good

The guards look great, the only problem is the bridge it slips down because the rubbers are not good. Had to put black tape around the ends of the bridge to make it hold. I feel this is going to be a problem in the future.

Fiddly to install but fits cube axial

Instructions aren’t very clear and we ended up with a spare screw at the end which didn’t go anywhere we could see. There was also a typo on the screw size for one step which didn’t exist (at least not in my package). The good news is this mudguard fits my cube axial ws race disc (the women’s specific version of the attain) although this is weirdly not advertised anywhere. It’s keeping my bum dry anyway and looks minimal enough that it doesn’t ruin the look of my cube too much!

OK, but not great

Thought these would be a better product since they are designed specifically for the Attain range. Maybe because I have a small size frame they don't seem to fit as well as I hoped. The bridge won't go high enough up the seat stays because as you tighten the screw, it pushes itself back down due to the wedge profile of the bridge. As another reviewer said, the screws supplied were not of the correct length, I had 2x M5x20mm screws and not 1x M5x15 and 1x M5x25 as the instructions specified. The 20mm screw was not long enough to pass through the bridge so I had to source another screw. The sticky pads are also a waste of time since they squeezed straight out when tightening the screws.

Essential mudguard for Cube Attain GTC Pro

This is the only mudguard specifically designed for the Attain Pro GTC - so really is the only choice wrt mudguards is you want to minimise marking your frame. Albeit a little pricey they aren't totally stupid money. Fit 1) need to pay close attention to the orientation of the metal brackets - no biggy 2) for my GTC pro the seat stay bridge fixing point had a bolt a little too short - so I had to replace. So knocked one of 'Build Quality' - although its really a minor point. Adjustment - very easy indeed - the easiest mudguard I have ever fitted..and Ive done a few In Use - Pretty darned good - rock solid and a tight look against the wheels - no rattles whatever. Quite impressed. Conclusion - a must have accessory as far as im concerned - helps keep you/your bike/ and anyone following reasonably free of spray.

Well engineered and great service

Ordered these online from Tredz when the local Cube dealer quoted "weeks" to get them in. Arrived the next day and with Haribos in the box!! TOTALLY brill service (unconnected comment but the comparison photos that compare the cycling lights in action on the Tredz site are absolutely brilliant and a great idea!!) Having struggled (with help from the bike shop's engineers too) on fitting manufacturer's own mudguards to their own bike before (!!) the cube ones are a revelation!! Really clear instructions + photos and fantastic design meant that these went on really well in 1.5 hours and feel great!! Lovely and light but really solid, plus easy adjustment if required. As long as you've got the correct Allan keys and a 4-5NM torque wrench you're good to go. Look SUPERB on the bike and in fact almost unnoticeable. FAB experience al round!!

Mudguard Guide

Mudguard Guide

Why use mudguards?

Mudguards help keep you warm and dry in the wetter months while also protecting your bike from mud, grit and spray.

This can dramatically cut down any maintenance needed to your bike through the winter. For commuters they are essential, road cyclists will enjoy the dry, comfortable feeling while not spraying any friends behind, and mountain bikers will cut down spray and mud to the face, eyes and back. Warm and dry cycling is simply more enjoyable, meaning you can ride longer and more often through the winter.

What type of mudguards will fit my bike?

For commuters, road riders and general cyclists the first thing to look for are eyelets or attachment points on your frame and fork. There are often different widths of mudguard with all types to suit your tyre. There are many combinations of wheel size and tyre width available, check your bike for these sizes and choose the appropriate option.

“Ass Savers” and “Enduro Guards”

When you need a quick solution these light and unobtrusive mudguards make a great choice. The “Ass Saver” style clips into your saddle rails and only take seconds to take on and off, they help stop a soggy bottom on an unexpected rainy day or when the road surface is still wet. The “Enduro Guard” style is intended for mountain bikes and is often left on year-round, while you do need a couple of zip ties to fit, they are fit-and-forget and help keep spray and mud away from your face.

Full-length mudguards

If your bike does have eyelets then full-length mudguards can be used, these offer the best protection for bike and rider from the elements. They do take a little longer to fit as they are so robust. Some longer types have additional mud flaps and reflectors built in.

To find the right size, simply select the option that suits your wheel size and tyre width.

Clip on mudguards

Road and hybrid bikes with no eyelets for mudguards will use a clip-on type. These simply strap around the fork leg and rear stay to offer a very good amount of protection depending on the length of the mudguard.

Mountain bike mudguards

Mountain bikers can keep riding through the worst of the winter weather with fork arch mounted mudguards and rear mudguards mounted to either the chainstays or seatpost. With sizes working well with 29ers and rear chainstay mounted guards pose no issue with dropper seat posts.

They might not be the most glamorous of accessories but staying dry will keep you warm, meaning you can stay out longer and ride more often. Being able to keep riding through the winter will keep skill and fitness on point for when the trails and weather start to dry.

Fitting with zip ties they are strong and stay in place with minimal fuss.

Summary

Mountain bike with a downtube guard

Mudguards are essential to keep riding through the winter, with many different types there is a wet weather solution to almost every bike. Road cyclists will be able to keep training through the worst of weather and riding friends appreciate not riding through the spray normally thrown up by the rider ahead.

Your bike will thank you and your winter clothing will last longer. Commuters will find mudguards essential, and mountain bikers will find it easier to keep warm and dry through the most extreme conditions.
