Towbar mounted bike racks are fitted to a towball or towball mounting plate. If you’re looking for strength then these racks are for you. If access to your boot is essential you can get a towbar rack which can tilt out of the way.
Towbar and boot racks keep your bikes out of the airflow which improves fuel economy and reduces noise when you’re travelling.
Boot Racks:
Boot strapped racks are very easy to fit with plenty of adjustability letting you fit them to most car models. These are the most affordable way to carry multiple bikes with you.
Roof Racks:
Roof racks and bars are great because you don’t have to worry about reversing your car into tight spaces. Also as your bikes are up and out of the way they are harder to steal.
How many bikes can a rack fit?
Most car racks can fit up to two bikes, but you can get racks that fit up to four bikes weighing about 15-20kg each. If you’re going to be taking the whole family for a ride then a towbar rack is probably you’re best bet.
What is the maximum weight of a rack?
This will vary but boot racks and roof mounted racks will often be able to take 15-20kg bikes. Check the product description for more information.
If you ride a heavy bike such as an E-bike, fat bike or sturdy DH bike then look for a strong towbar rack with wide wheel holders.
Do I need a light board?
You need to make sure your rear lights and number plate aren’t obscured by in any way by a rack or bike. If you want a towbar or boot rack the easiest way to ensure you’re road legal is by fitting a lighting board.
