hip back

Was getting sick of using back packs when out mountain biking, was getting a sore back between shoulder blades. Thought i would try this hip bag. Seems decent quality, can get enought items in aswell, food, drink, tools and a jacket. has slipped down a few times but just need to sort the belt out to make it tighter.

Just about the perfect size

Plenty of space for a mini pimp, spare tube, tyre levers, keys, phone and a Clif bar. If you took the bladder out and carried a bottle (there's a specific space for one) then you could carry a light jacket too. Really useful. One point; try as I may, I can't get the pack to fit on my hips and the small of my back. My middle-age spread pushes the pack down a couple of inches so that it catches on the nose of my saddle when pushing off from a standing start. I've tried cinching it up really tight, but the straps always loosen off somewhat after a minute or two, Annoying, but not the end of the world. If you use the bladder, you will find yourself dropping your head to reach the bite valve which makes drinking while riding a little dangerous.

Hydration Packs Guide

Do I need a hydration backpack?

If you ride your mountain bike on off-road trails, then you will want to take some fluid with you. While many MTBs have bottle cages if you want more than 750ml of then you will need a hydration backpack. They are also useful for carrying extra clothing, tools and food.

How much fluid can I carry?

Hydration backpacks are supplied with a 1.5, 2 or 3 litre bladder to carry fluid. A larger bladder will enable you to choose how much you carry with you on specific rides as you don’t need to use the whole capacity. A hose with a mouthpiece and tap allows you to drink while you ride.

How much kit can I carry in a hydration backpack?

This very much depends on the model - a classic CamelBak will only have room for a trail tool and thin layer while an alpine style pack will have room for tools, spares, food waterproofs and post ride clothing. In addition to this some hydration packs have compression straps that allow you to vary the capacity and carry straps for carrying extra kit, like body armour.

What size hydration pack do I need?

This will depend on the type and length of ride.

  • Up to 5 litres – short rides with minimal kit
  • 6–12 litres – all day rides carrying extra layers, food and trail tools
  • 13-25 litres – all day and multi-day rides carrying extra layers, food, tools, spares and post ride clothing

Can I ride technical terrain with a hydration pack?

While all our hydration packs are designed for serious off-roading some are more suited to riding steep technical terrain. Look for a pack with a horizontal or lumbar bladder and a substantial waist strap for riding more challenging, enduro style trails. as these offer a lower centre of gravity for increased stability.

Can I use a hydration pack for commuting?

Many hydration packs feature reflective strips and a tab for a rear light so make a great commuting packs too.

Are the hydration bladders easy to clean?

Yes, hydration pack bladders tend to have a wide opening so you can easily get your hand inside to give them a good clean.
