The ultimate comfort from Nettles
by Anonymous user on 04/06/2020

I always tend to wear long trousers due to thinning skin issues and healing and read many reviews on other longs too. I decided to try these based on others comfort comments and I haven’t been disappointed. In this really warm weather I’ve worn them on a 40 miler over my Assos chamois. They’re that light you don’t know they’re on, they move and stretch in all the right places and wick sweat so well there was absolutely no overheating or excess warmth. I went for grey to help with not absorbing the suns heat. The waist holds in position brilliantly and comfortably. They wash well too. My only gripe would be the ankles aren’t really made for sliding size 12 feet in with any ease that said once on they sit well and don’t move but aren’t too tight. I’ve brushed past sharp brambles with no snagging (yet) but not crash tested durability of the fabric. If I could justify a second pair I’d have some they’re that good!

Nice trousers but not hard wearing at all which is disappointing for something designed for biking.
by Anonymous user on 22/10/2019

Bought a pair of these and they are great on and very comfy. They did however rip from kneeling down on the ground, not very good wear for the price. The material is very light weight but obviously very fragile. I can't imagine what they would do if you crashed.

Comfortable & lite
by Richard H on 19/04/2019

Been wearing these almost every day riding. Very comfortable & good at wicking the sweat away. I don't know what they will be like after a wash.

Freeride/Downhill Trousers

Freeride/Downhill Trousers

Some riders will prefer the feeling of full trousers when hitting the trails or wilderness. They can feel comforting and safer than riding in shorts.

Designed to be ridden on trails where protection from crashing is more important than weather protection. For waterproof trousers see here.

Fabrics

Most trousers use predominantly Nylon or Polyester as the main fabric. To aid stretch and flexibility some will also use elastane or spandex. To help with mishaps on the trail like crashes or brushes with thorns and brambles, many trousers will incorporate fabrics like Kevlar, Ripstop Nylon, 600D Polyester or Cordura for extra strength in vital areas like the knee, seat and outside of the upper leg.

DWR finish (weatherproofing)

To add a level of water repellency some trousers are treated with a DWR coating. This is the first line of defence, causing water droplets to bead and run off the fabric. The DWR coating will wear away over time so you will need a Waterproofer such as Nikwax to reinstall performance.

Please see our Technical Fabric Guide for more information.

Stretch

4-way stretch or all-way stretch in the fabric means the trousers can have a slim fit while not restricting movement.

Waist/Ankle adjustment

Most freeride/DH trousers will have a tapered ankle to avoid snagging on the bike and keeping a slim fit. Some may have Velcro or zips to adjust the fit around the ankle. Waist adjustment can come in the form of a ratchet-style buckle, Boa fastener, Velcro tabs or simply a button and fly.

Breathability

With more trail and endure riders wearing trousers there is a new style of trouser that caters less to the protection of pure DH and more toward long all-mountain days. Lighter fabrics with ventilation or breathable properties aid wicking and are becoming more popular to aid comfort on those big rides.

Fit

A modern MTB trouser is much slimmer than the motocross trouser it originated from. A Slim fit helps to reduce wind flap or the risk of snagging on the bike. However, almost all trousers in this category will give room for additional protective layers under the trouser. Articulated or pre-shaped legs designed to be comfortable when riding on the trail, and not feel tight around the knees, especially when wearing pads.
