The Haibike SkidPlate:

Especially eMTBs often suffer from impacts or stone chipping which damage the low-situated motor severely. Therefore, we were the first manufacturer to introduce the SkidPlate back in 2012, a protection element which protects the bottom side of the motor.

Bottom side protection

Here the concept of a 'sacrifice part' applies: Similar to a helmet, the SkidPlate absorbs impact forces by deformation or destruction which would otherwise damage the significantly more expensive motor.

Plastic as ideal raw material

This is why we also use a special, shock-resistant plastic. This material conducts the incoming forces very well but stays dimensionally stable even under severe deformation at the same time compared to other materials which do not switch back to their original shape after deformation. The production in the corresponding colour perfectly hide scratches and smaller damage. If required, the SkidPlate can simply and cheaply be exchanged.

The Haibike SES system:

Bosch motors pose two challenges for engineers at once when developing an efficient chassis: its construction size and its relatively small sprocket. Usually, the chainstay bearing has to be installed close to the point of contact between chain and sprocket. Due to the small size, this would result in the bearing running directly through the motor which is, of course, impossible. Therefore, we created a simple but efficient concept: the Haibike Sprocket Equalizing System (S.E.S).

For a perfect chassis

First of all, we move the chainstay bearing up. Thus, we achieve an optimized wheel lifting effect (the bike moves away from the obstacle) on the one hand, and on the other a short wheelbase (as the bearing point is not located between motor and rear wheel).

A pulley prevents influences on the drive unit

In order to avoid the inevitable influence of the chassis on the chain during suspension, we axially place the pulley directly on the chainstay. Additionally, we integrated a chain guiding on the pulley. Together with the chain guiding on the Haibike sprocket, a chain drop is almost impossible.

The Haibike StepIn battery integration:

Lower tube batteries have always posed a big problem for developers as a large volume has to fit on a relatively filigrane frame. The Haibike StepIn concept, however, proves that there are technologically and optically convincing solutions.

Convincing optical and technologic solutions

In order to reduce the optical 'weight' of the bike, we are integrating the Bosch battery slightly in the lower tube. With a combination of hydroforming tubes and Special casting components, we are including the battery optically in the frame and thus can save the common, tolerance-afflicted welding of the mounting areas. Furthermore, this solution reduces the distance between motor and battery by 11mm.

The Haibike FullCarbon interface:

Usually, the Bosch motor is screwed onto the carbon frame's mounting plates through an adapter which increases the bike’s weight, construction size and tolerances. This is why we developed the FullCarbon concept which solves all problems elegantly.

Direct screwing

The motor is screwed directly onto the carbon frame without using additional adapters. In the developing process, we decided to eliminate the metal cores in the Interface. Instead, the shape of carbon is optimally designed to transfer the forces into the frame. Hence, the weight and construction size is reduced and, at the same time, the stability and precision is increased.

The Haibike UD carbon frames:

Being one of the first manufacturers on the ePerformance market, Haibike uses carbon as frame material since 2014. We use our long classic frame manufacturing experience here. Numerous European and World Championships, as well as one silver medal at the Olympic Games, were won on our Haibike carbon models.

All frame parts made of carbon

All XDURO and SDURO carbon frames are made of carbon components only (except for the SkidPlate). Every single part is laminated by hand. During this process, the carbon fibre is positioned according to a set plan, parallelly and in accordance with the later stress direction (unidirectional laminate). The advantage is that the tear strength can be used efficiently, very rigid parts can be defined and other parts can be designed with more flex.

Highly resilient and efficient

The result is a highly resilient frame which does not only translate every single bit of energy in propulsion, but also reduces the overall weight by its extraordinary low frame weight from 2.790g in a Fully and 1.950g in a Hardtail.

Bosch Performance CX Drive Unit:

The Bosch Performance CX has been specially optimized for sporty use. The motor delivers a constant maximum torque of up to 75 Nm up even to a high speed range.

The motor offers an impressive maximum torque of 75 Nm. The “Direct Flow” technique also guarantees powerful support in the lower cadence levels. Trail Control offers a dynamic power management system, that allows the rider to choose the optimum support level (50-300%) for the terrain they are riding, their riding style, and the distance they are looking to cover. “Shift detection” protects your chain by cutting off the torque from the motor during shifting for smooth gear changes.

Bosch Nyon Bord Computer

It is a control centre, navigation system, fitness trainer, music player and much more: the Nyon display board computer.

The large 4.3 inch colour screen displays comprehensive information, such as the built-in navigation with moving map in both 2D and 3D or classic information like current, average and maximum speeds, day trip and total mileage.

Furthermore, Nyon also informs about on the time, riding duration and even the total operating time of the e-bike. The system also has an intelligent remaining range calculation with topography display, can display incoming SMS and allows to accept incoming calls from the smartphone via Bluetooth connection. Likewise, the driver can control the music player on his smartphone.

For committed exercisers, the Nyon computer provides comprehensive fitness functions and information such as heart rate and cadence, the current driver performance, calorie consumption and training efficiency. The Nyon also has a Bluetooth preparation for heart rate chest straps. The five selectable and individually adjustable support modes (Eco, Tour, eMTB/Sport, Turbo & OFF) as the pushing aid can be directly controlled by the remote on the handlebar. A Micro-USB interface provides a convenient charging function for mobile phone or MP3 player. The "OFF-board use" allows you to use all functions of the Nyon even when it’s removed.

Electric Mountain Bike Guide

Is an Electric Mountain Bike Right for Me?

If you’re new to the cycling world, we highly recommend taking a look at our bike buying guide overview or our electric bike buying guide to help you decide what type of e bike is right for you.

When you’re choosing an electric mountain bike, there are a few things to look out for, which can help you to work out the quality and performance to expect from a particular model.

Usage & Suspension travel

Just like a regular full suspension or hardtail mountain bike, the amount of available suspension travel on an eMTB varies with the intended use. Depending on the type of mountain bike riding you’ll be doing, you’ll want a bike with longer or shorter suspension travel as well as components suited to more or less technical terrain.

Frame Material

Most electric mountain bike frames are made from aluminium alloy, although some are made from carbon fibre composite.

Aluminium

Aluminium alloy is lightweight, stiff, strong. Manufacturers often develop their own aluminium alloys, such as ALUXX by Giant. Aluminium is found on a wide range of e bikes, from entry-level and enthusiast bikes, right the way up to top-spec eMTBs.

Carbon Fibre

Carbon fibre is lighter, stiffer, stronger, and more expensive than aluminium. The main benefit for electric mountain bikes is that carbon frames are stiffer for improved handling.

Drive Tech

Designed to enable you to have more fun on the trails, all of our electric mountain bikes feature powerful crank drive motors with long lasting lithium-ion battery packs and easily accessible control units.

Motor

Crank drive motors boost your natural pedalling power. The cranks are connected to the motor and the motor is connected to the chainring which then powers the bike forward. The bike senses the pressure that you put though the pedals and then adds an appropriate level of power to make pedalling easier. This additional power is delivered seamlessly, and you will feel like your legs have just become much more powerful. Motors all have a nominal 250w output and are usually provided by big component manufacturers like Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and Brose.

Battery

Easily charged either on or off the bike the lithium-ion battery pack will offer you long lasting assistance. Where and how you ride will make a big difference to the range that you can expect to achieve from a single charge, but most e bikers find the capacity of these batteries to be more than sufficient. Some brands offer innovative ways to integrate the battery within the frame. 400Wh or 500Wh batteries are most common.

Control Units

All electric mountain bikes allow you to adjust the amount of power the motor delivers. This helps to help you manage the battery capacity. Control units have some kind of display that, at the very least, shows remaining battery capacity and the current power mode. Some control units feature a handlebar mounted display unit that displays additional information like estimated range and satellite navigation prompts. Many eMTBs offer Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity with smartphone apps for fine tuning the motor output and accessing more advanced features.

Groupset

An electric mountain bike’s groupset, is where the biggest difference in component quality is seen. A complete groupset comprises of the following parts:

  • Chainset (aka Crankset)
  • Bottom bracket
  • Brakes
  • Brake levers
  • Shifter
  • Derailleur
  • Chain
  • Cassette

Electric mountain bike groupset components are typically supplied by either Shimano or SRAM, sometimes with additional manufacturers like Magura, Tektro and TRP supplying brake systems. You will mostly find one-by drivetrains with a single front chainring and a wide range rear cassette.

Shimano and SRAM both produce a range of groupsets to suit different budgets. The hierarchy table here compares the different Shimano and SRAM groupsets to determine which bikes offer the best performance.

Wheel Size

Just like regular mountain bikes, e MTBs are available with different wheel sizes. 27.5” (650b) and 29” wheels are both available but the most common e MTB size is 27.5”+ (6fattie) that bridges the gap between the two.

MTB wheel sizes

27.5” (650b) wheels strike the ideal balance between fast rolling and nimble handling. They are lighter than 29” wheels so are faster to accelerate. On the other hand, the smaller wheel size rolls less efficiently than the larger size, making the bike more prone to losing speed over rough ground.

29” wheels roll fastest but are less nimble. These wheels are naturally smoother over rough ground but are heavier and slower to accelerate. Larger riders may find a better fit on a 29er, but smaller riders may find 29” wheels a little cumbersome.

27.5+ (6fattie) wheels feature wider 2.8” – 3.0” tyres and offer more cushioning (float) as well as more grip. With the extra size of the high-volume tyres, the overall wheel diameter is similar to a 29er, so these wheels carry speed very well on rough ground. Plus sized wheels are ideal for electric mountain bikes as they deal best with the extra weight of the motor and battery, and are great for riding more challenging terrain.

Suspension components

Electric mountain bike suspension components (i.e. the fork or rear shock absorber) are also a way to identify the quality of a bike. While Fox and RockShox are the most common manufacturers, there are a number of brands producing suspension components for mountain bikes.

Entry Level eMTBs

Entry level electric mountain bikes (up to approximately £2,500) may come supplied with a fork and rear shock supplied by SR Suntour, X-Fusion or RockShox. These components will allow a limited amount of adjustment, including:

  • Coil spring preload / air spring pressure adjustment.
  • Lockout switch.
  • Rebound damping adjustment on models towards the top of the price range.
Mid-range and enthusiast eMTBs

Mid-range and enthusiast eMTBs (up to approximately £5,000) use components from brands including Fox, RockShox and Manitou. At this level, suspension components have features like:

  • Preload adjustment / air spring pressure adjustment
  • Rebound damping adjustment
  • Lockout switch
  • Multi-position ‘mode’ switch
  • Compression damping adjustment
Top of the range eMTBs

Top of the range electric bikes (over £5,000) also use components from Fox, RockShox and Manitou, with a few select models using parts from high-end suspension brands like Ohlins. At this price, suspension components have features including:

  • Coil spring preload adjustment / air spring pressure adjustment
  • High and low speed rebound damping adjustment
  • High and low speed compression damping adjustment
  • Lockout switch
  • Multi-position ‘mode’ switch
  • Advanced low-friction coatings (e.g. Fox’s golden-coloured Kashima coating)
