    Hand Pump Guide

    Hand Pump Guide

Hand pumps are the type you need for road or trail side use. Suitable for road, mountain and hybrid bikes they are small enough to fit in a trail pack and many can also be strapped to the frame of your bike.

    What to look for

    Valve Type

There are two main valve types used for cycling. Most hand pumps are suitable for both types of valve, but some will only fit one, so it’s best to know which type you need before you buy.

Schrader valves are the same type of valve that you find on cars. This valve type is usually found on kids bikes as well as more affordable mountain and hybrid bikes.

Presta valves are cycling specific valves. You’ll find these valves on road bikes as well as high-end mountain and hybrid bikes. Most tubeless valves are Presta valves.

    types of bike valve

Most hand pumps require a small amount of disassembly to convert between Presta and Schrader valves. Dual-Head, SwitchHitter, and some other pumps work with both types of valve with no disassembly required.

High Pressure (HP) or High Volume (HV)

Some hand pumps are best for certain bike tyres and this depends on the tyre pressure and volume of the tyre. Mountain bikes have wide tyres that need lots of air, but pressures are low, so a High-Volume pump is best. Road bikes have narrow tyres that need less air, but the pressures are much higher, so a High-Pressure pump is best. Hybrid tyres fit somewhere between road and MTB so a general-purpose pump will be fine.

The maximum pressure of your tyres will be written on the side walls.

    Pump Size

There is always a bit of a trade off with hand pump size. A smaller pump is easier to carry, as it takes up less room, but pumping up your tyres will be more difficult. Very small high-pressure pumps are okay for topping up pressures on a road bike, but you will need a larger general purpose or high-volume pump for wide mountain bike tyres.

    Frame Mounts

If you want to attach your pump to the frame of your bike, then you’ll need one that comes with a Frame mount. Most small and medium size hand pumps have them. Frame mounts are compatible with bottle cages and both fit on the same mounting points, usually on the down tube and/or seat tube. Some larger hand pumps aren’t suitable for attaching to the frame so will need to be carried in a pack.

    Other Features

Pumps with a flexible hose are easier to use as they allow for a little movement when using the pump, so tend to let less air escape. Some mini pumps have a hidden hose that can be extended for use. Hand pumps that have a foot plate and a T-handle are easiest to use. You can pump up tyres very quickly with these pumps, but they tend to be quite bulky.

Another useful feature is a pressure gauge to help you get the right tyre pressure. The gauges on these pumps aren’t the most accurate but they will give you a better idea of your pressures than pressing the tyre with your thumb.
