Built around a 27.5+ wheels with modern geometry and no compromise components, the Nail Trail E and Pine Mountain E are sure to open new horizons to riders.

The Pine Mountain Electric enables adventures that you never believed were possible on two wheels. Powerful Shimano STEPS electric drive units are paired with adventure-seeking CrMo Steel frames with burly 120mm travel suspension forks and 27.5+ tires, yielding bikes that can climb like billy goats and handle with chutzpah, even while weighed down with gear and supplies. Take it out for some hours of great trail fun, or load it up and head out for an overnight at your favorite nearby peak, the Pine Mountain Electric is ready to be your next adventure travel buddy.

Shimano’s STEPS system is neatly integrated into the frame, with a lockable and removable battery pack that fully charges in five hours from a standard wall outlet.

Is an Electric Mountain Bike Right for Me?

When you’re choosing an electric mountain bike, there are a few things to look out for, which can help you to work out the quality and performance to expect from a particular model.


Usage & Suspension travel

Just like a regular full suspension or hardtail mountain bike, the amount of available suspension travel on an eMTB varies with the intended use. Depending on the type of mountain bike riding you’ll be doing, you’ll want a bike with longer or shorter suspension travel as well as components suited to more or less technical terrain.

Frame Material

Most electric mountain bike frames are made from aluminium alloy, although some are made from carbon fibre composite.

Aluminium

Aluminium alloy is lightweight, stiff, strong. Manufacturers often develop their own aluminium alloys, such as ALUXX by Giant. Aluminium is found on a wide range of e bikes, from entry-level and enthusiast bikes, right the way up to top-spec eMTBs.

Carbon Fibre

Carbon fibre is lighter, stiffer, stronger, and more expensive than aluminium. The main benefit for electric mountain bikes is that carbon frames are stiffer for improved handling.


Drive Tech

Designed to enable you to have more fun on the trails, all of our electric mountain bikes feature powerful crank drive motors with long lasting lithium-ion battery packs and easily accessible control units.

Motor

Crank drive motors boost your natural pedalling power. The cranks are connected to the motor and the motor is connected to the chainring which then powers the bike forward. The bike senses the pressure that you put though the pedals and then adds an appropriate level of power to make pedalling easier. This additional power is delivered seamlessly, and you will feel like your legs have just become much more powerful. Motors all have a nominal 250w output and are usually provided by big component manufacturers like Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and Brose.

Battery

Easily charged either on or off the bike the lithium-ion battery pack will offer you long lasting assistance. Where and how you ride will make a big difference to the range that you can expect to achieve from a single charge, but most e bikers find the capacity of these batteries to be more than sufficient. Some brands offer innovative ways to integrate the battery within the frame. 400Wh or 500Wh batteries are most common.

Control Units

All electric mountain bikes allow you to adjust the amount of power the motor delivers. This helps to help you manage the battery capacity. Control units have some kind of display that, at the very least, shows remaining battery capacity and the current power mode. Some control units feature a handlebar mounted display unit that displays additional information like estimated range and satellite navigation prompts. Many eMTBs offer Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity with smartphone apps for fine tuning the motor output and accessing more advanced features.

An electric mountain bike’s groupset, is where the biggest difference in component quality is seen. A complete groupset comprises of the following parts:

Electric mountain bike groupset components are typically supplied by either Shimano or SRAM, sometimes with additional manufacturers like Magura, Tektro and TRP supplying brake systems. You will mostly find one-by drivetrains with a single front chainring and a wide range rear cassette.

Shimano and SRAM both produce a range of groupsets to suit different budgets. The hierarchy table here compares the different Shimano and SRAM groupsets to determine which bikes offer the best performance.


Wheel Size

Just like regular mountain bikes, e MTBs are available with different wheel sizes. 27.5” (650b) and 29” wheels are both available but the most common e MTB size is 27.5”+ (6fattie) that bridges the gap between the two.

MTB wheel sizes

27.5” (650b) wheels strike the ideal balance between fast rolling and nimble handling. They are lighter than 29” wheels so are faster to accelerate. On the other hand, the smaller wheel size rolls less efficiently than the larger size, making the bike more prone to losing speed over rough ground.

29” wheels roll fastest but are less nimble. These wheels are naturally smoother over rough ground but are heavier and slower to accelerate. Larger riders may find a better fit on a 29er, but smaller riders may find 29” wheels a little cumbersome.

27.5+ (6fattie) wheels feature wider 2.8” – 3.0” tyres and offer more cushioning (float) as well as more grip. With the extra size of the high-volume tyres, the overall wheel diameter is similar to a 29er, so these wheels carry speed very well on rough ground. Plus sized wheels are ideal for electric mountain bikes as they deal best with the extra weight of the motor and battery, and are great for riding more challenging terrain.


Suspension components

Electric mountain bike suspension components (i.e. the fork or rear shock absorber) are also a way to identify the quality of a bike. While Fox and RockShox are the most common manufacturers, there are a number of brands producing suspension components for mountain bikes.

Entry Level eMTBs

Entry level electric mountain bikes (up to approximately £2,500) may come supplied with a fork and rear shock supplied by SR Suntour, X-Fusion or RockShox. These components will allow a limited amount of adjustment, including:

  • Coil spring preload / air spring pressure adjustment.
  • Lockout switch.
  • Rebound damping adjustment on models towards the top of the price range.
Mid-range and enthusiast eMTBs

Mid-range and enthusiast eMTBs (up to approximately £5,000) use components from brands including Fox, RockShox and Manitou. At this level, suspension components have features like:

  • Preload adjustment / air spring pressure adjustment
  • Rebound damping adjustment
  • Lockout switch
  • Multi-position ‘mode’ switch
  • Compression damping adjustment
Top of the range eMTBs

Top of the range electric bikes (over £5,000) also use components from Fox, RockShox and Manitou, with a few select models using parts from high-end suspension brands like Ohlins. At this price, suspension components have features including:

  • Coil spring preload adjustment / air spring pressure adjustment
  • High and low speed rebound damping adjustment
  • High and low speed compression damping adjustment
  • Lockout switch
  • Multi-position ‘mode’ switch
  • Advanced low-friction coatings (e.g. Fox’s golden-coloured Kashima coating)
