Rear Lights Buying Guide
Rear Lights Buying Guide
Rear lights are essential for riding in an urban environment, many will use them in daylight to aid saftey when riding in busy traffic. At night, a flashing rear light can been seen clearly by other users on the road.
With one attached to the seatpost it can be good to have another on the chainstay, backpack or helmet. 20 Lumen would be sufficient for commuting in urban areas. For those living in darker areas or riding on dimly lit roads, a rear light closer to 100 lumens would be best.
Take a look at our Rear Light Comparison Tool to help you choose the right bike light for your needs.
Lumen Ranges
While front lights can reach up to and above 1000 Lumens, at the rear anything from 20 to 100 lumens is plenty. Multiple rear lights are the best way to be seen from behind, especially when on the flash mode.
For comparison, the full moon on a clear night is about 1 lumen, a smartphone's backlight is around 20, and a single standard car headlight is 1200 lumens.

The more lights you have, the more visible you will be to traffic so ideally, you should have more than one light with one on flash mode so you are seen clearly at junctions and crossings by other road users. Flashing lights are much easier to see by others especially when it is raining.
Side Visibility / Beam Spread
Bike lights will often mention having side visibility that adds safety to the light, often more common with rear lights the beam is designed in a way that spreads light out to the sides, manufacturers might give this in degrees, for example, 120° visibility.
The beam pattern of a light can be different, some are more like a spotlight, while others offer a wide spread, some even give a combination of the two.
Use our Rear Light Comparison Tool to see the differences in a real-world situation.

Runtime Ranges
Modern low output LED lights last a very long time depending on the mode selected. An entry-level light could have a run time between 1-20 hours depending on mode. The flash mode of a light will give the longest run time, and this is perfect for a busy urban environment where being seen is more important than seeing.
Mid-range lights can last up to 80 hours, more than enough for a commute, and reassuring when you forget to charge or cannot find a USB lead at work.

High-end lights give incredible performance when the situations demand the best. Extremly high output and variable modes to maximise run time.
To compare popular lights we have made a Light Comparison Tool to show the differences.
Batteries and Charging
Power your lights
There are two main power sources for your lights: ordinary batteries such as AA which need replacing when they run out, or those with a rechargeable battery built in. A rechargable battery is often charged with a standard USB lead, this makes them incredibly practical to charge, you could even charge from an external power bank or dynamo hub on longer trips.

A rechargeable bike light set used to be far more expensive, but there are now many cost effective and compact units available which recharge from your computer with a USB cable. A USB bike light set is a brilliant option for commuters, who can boost them at their office desk during the day.
Mounting Options
Smaller lights generally come with a flexible rubber mount that is part of the light itself, these are robust and offer a quick and easy way to mount to different sized handlebars and seat posts.
Some rear lights can be mounted to backpacks, helmets or panier bags, this is a great way to raise the level of the light up to the eye level of drivers behind.

Others will come with a bracket that fixes to the bike in the same way, but the light itself is removable. Again this style is quick and easy to remove the light for charging, but with no need to move the straps from your bike.
Other powerful and heavy lights can come with a more robust mounting bracket that securely mounts to the bike with a bolt. this bracket then has a quick release option for the light itself. For off-road riding, this is essential as the bike light will be solid in position and not moving around over rough terrain.
Waterproof Rating
The majority of bike lights are given a waterproof rating. They can be a little difficult to understand but will always start with the letters IP. This stands for Ingress Protection, this is then followed by two numbers. The first number is the rating for the protection from dust and small particles. The second number is the rating for the protection from a liquid. The higher the number, the more protection is offered.

A light with a rating of less that IP64 might not be the best idea for protection in UK weather. A light with a rating of IP63 will allow water spray in at certain angles, but a light at IP64 is protected against spray from any direction. The larger the number the more protection so a light that is rated at IP67 can handle full submersion in water up to 1 meter deep.
Wearable Lights
Extra visibility
If you commute on lit-up city streets, rear lights are more than essential. To have a second light high up and in the eye-line of drivers and other road users is a very good idea. With reflective clothing and/or accessories like backpack covers and jackets, adding a wearable rear light will really make you stand out. Most backpacks will have a loop or somewhere to secure a light, using the strap or mount that come with the light.

Usually not a concern for MTB riders, nothing extravagant is needed for the rear, just so the rider can be seen on any road or path that might lead to the trail.
