Freeride/Downhill Trousers
Freeride/Downhill Trousers
Some riders will prefer the feeling of full trousers when hitting the trails or wilderness. They can feel comforting and safer than riding in shorts.
Designed to be ridden on trails where protection from crashing is more important than weather protection. For waterproof trousers see here.
Fabrics
Most trousers use predominantly Nylon or Polyester as the main fabric. To aid stretch and flexibility some will also use elastane or spandex. To help with mishaps on the trail like crashes or brushes with thorns and brambles, many trousers will incorporate fabrics like Kevlar, Ripstop Nylon, 600D Polyester or Cordura for extra strength in vital areas like the knee, seat and outside of the upper leg.

DWR finish (weatherproofing)
To add a level of water repellency some trousers are treated with a DWR coating. This is the first line of defence, causing water droplets to bead and run off the fabric. The DWR coating will wear away over time so you will need a Waterproofer such as Nikwax to reinstall performance.
Please see our Technical Fabric Guide for more information.

Stretch
4-way stretch or all-way stretch in the fabric means the trousers can have a slim fit while not restricting movement.

Waist/Ankle adjustment
Most freeride/DH trousers will have a tapered ankle to avoid snagging on the bike and keeping a slim fit. Some may have Velcro or zips to adjust the fit around the ankle. Waist adjustment can come in the form of a ratchet-style buckle, Boa fastener, Velcro tabs or simply a button and fly.

Breathability
With more trail and endure riders wearing trousers there is a new style of trouser that caters less to the protection of pure DH and more toward long all-mountain days. Lighter fabrics with ventilation or breathable properties aid wicking and are becoming more popular to aid comfort on those big rides.

Fit
A modern MTB trouser is much slimmer than the motocross trouser it originated from. A Slim fit helps to reduce wind flap or the risk of snagging on the bike. However, almost all trousers in this category will give room for additional protective layers under the trouser. Articulated or pre-shaped legs designed to be comfortable when riding on the trail, and not feel tight around the knees, especially when wearing pads.
