Product Description

The Orbea Gain D50 was built to enhance your ride, not dominate it. The Enough Power and Enough Energy concepts result in an exceptionally lightweight, sportive and rideable road bike – a machine that heeds the call of the open road. Gain embraces your sweat and hard work and works in unison with your efforts to tick off the kilometres. System interfaces are modern, integrated and sleek. There are no bulky components to reduce the riding experience, distractions have been minimized so it’s just you, Gain and the hours ahead.

Key Features:

  • Orbea Gain 6000 series aluminium alloy frame with fully integrated battery
  • Carbon fork with flat mount disc brake
  • Shimano Claris 2x8 speed drivetrain for reliable gear shifting
  • Shimano Claris disc brakes for all-weather stopping power
  • Sizes: X Small, Small, Medium, Large, X Large
  • Colours: Green/Red, Black, White, Turquoise/Orange
  • The Orbea Gain D50 is available with 0% APR finance

Drive information:

  • Motor: Ebikemotion X35, rear hub drive, 40Nm
  • Battery: Ebikemotion 36v downtube integrated battery pack
  • User Interface / Display: iWoc One top tube button
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth smart phone app

Mode Button - Save space on your handlebar for a GPS if you wish, or ride without clutter. Gain’s control centre is an attractive and discreet button on the top tube. With the simple iWoc ONE interface, you can power the system on or off, check motor assist level and view the remaining battery charge. Coloured LED lighting puts all the information you need right at your fingertips.

Internal Battery - The battery is one of the most noticeable components of an eBike system, so every step has been taken to find the lightest, smallest and most discreet unit. Gain’s Enough Energy concept provides you with enough battery power, not more. It eliminates the need for a bulky, high-output battery that needs to be removed from the bike.

Drive System - The heart of Gain, the rear hub motor is the key to Gain’s Enough Power concept. The sophisticated drive system provides enough smooth and reliable assistance at levels designed to enhance your ride, not dominate it. And since the motor is at the hub, you’ll experience drag-free pedalling when Gain is not providing a push.

C.a.n. Integration - Gain doesn’t require a multitude of wires, ports or accessories. The CAN (Controller Area Network) bus port provides a single interface for charging, system diagnosis or attaching the external backup battery.

PAS Sensor - Gain’s smooth and balanced assist requires an advanced sensor. Blending perfectly with our effort to create a sleek and discrete system, the cassette lock ring holds 20 magnets that are detected by the integrated dropout sensor. The system monitors your pedalling input and adjusts power accordingly.

App - A smartphone and smartwatch compatible app enable deeper control of the iWoc system used by Gain. Ride tracking, activity and GPS route uploading and other functions are available from your mobile device, making Gain an even more valuable tool.

Versatile - The new carbon frame includes the same integration features other Orbea carbon frames have, plus the complexity of also fully integrating the motor power cable and the P.A.S. sensor.

Mavic - In order to bring the best quality built, we´ve teamed up with Mavic and brought their bestsellers into the Gain family; the Aksium Elite and Cosmic Carbon wheels.

Tyre Clearance - The move to wider tires is happening everywhere, with even road racers opting for the comfort and lower rolling resistance of 25C or 28C tyres. To make Gain even more versatile it is possible to mount most 40C tyres, either with clincher or tubeless.

Great Bike, easy ride.
by Anonymous user on 11/06/2020

This is my second ebike. The first was a Whyte hybrid so I knew what to expect from going electric. I prefer to ride a road bike and found the Gain to be ideal. So far only ridden about 60 miles, used 13% of the battery, and still getting used to turning the power on and off as needed. I'm and older rider who prefers a bit of comfort and have changed the stem to 90mm in a raised position. With new tyres I normally remove and refit them at home so I know I can fix punctures on the road, but I can't break the bead of the tyre from the rims, so I'm assuming they are tubeless, and have bought a repair kit to carry with me instead of spare tubes.. The Claris group set isn't to bad, and I'm sure it will get less clunking and it it wears in. Overall the bike is comfortable, the brakes are good and it handles well. However the service from Tredz is not good. They agreed to fit a different chainset for me, which they failed to do, and just sent it in the box with the bike. They didn't include a multitool, pedal spanner, or bike insurance voucher as advertised. Emails are ignored, I gave up waiting on the phone, and the so called live chat needs renaming. I've been a customer of Tredz for many years but will think twice about buying from them in the future.

Great purchase!
by Anonymous user on 28/05/2020

I purchased my bike a couple of weeks ago and I have to say I love it! I live in quite a hilly part of the country and I was finding it difficult on my normal road bike, hence the change. Wow what a difference it has made. To change to the different levels of help on the bike is a very easy process and the charging of the bike is easy also. All in all a very happy customer!

Wish I had bought one sooner
by Rachael K on 05/02/2020

Firstly I rarely write reviews but regularly read them so I thought I would write one about this bike. My review is split up in two parts, the first will deal with the store and the second part about the bike. 1) I was nervous about spending such a large amount of money on a bike that I hadn't seen from a shop I've not been to but having read plenty of positive reviews on the internet regarding the shop and I was reassured. The order process was smooth and simple with plenty of communication. The bike was delivered within a couple of days and I had received an email detailing step by step instructions with pictures as to how to assemble it. Some people are experts when it comes to bikes but I'm not so I really appreciated the information. I also found their videos on YouTube very helpful and informative. The bike was well packaged and everything was there. I would not hesitate to order from them in the future. 2) I deliberated for some time regarding the purchase of the ebike and after reading reviews and watching videos I decided to buy this one. So far it is a decision I don't regret. The bike is lighter than I thought it would be. I have tested it over some steep gradients and it has worked a dream. I'm still out of breath and tired when I get to the top so it's not doing all the work. I can see how you could improve your cycling fitness by using an ebike like this as it encourages you to try those hills that you would probably have avoided or walked the bike up. I'm not sure if this bike would benefit all cyclists but if you're some one who has some cycling fitness but would like more than this might be for you. The seat that came with the bike is fine for me. Having had Shimano claris gears before I'm not a particular fan so I may upgrade these at a later date. Although fitted with disc brakes the bike does take longer to slow down than other bikes I have owned but that is something I can adjust to. The bike works off an app to record your activities etc and whilst it does give a lot of information, I have found this to be poor as it tends to stop recording the ride due to a loss of signal. Obviously if you are not riding in the countryside you might never experience this problem but I thought it was wort pointing out. Incidentally, it is the app which tells you how much battery you have left although the button on the top tube changes colour to alert you what battery% you have left. I did read some reviews where people were critical of the method to changing power output. For me personally I find it relatively easy to change the power output as it takes a split second, you can notice the difference when going from turbo back to eco, it almost feels as if the brakes have been applied and you're still trying to ride it. Overall I don't regret buying an ebike and more importantly I don't regret buying this bike as it is perfect for my needs. I like the idea that there is just enough power as I am wanting to improve my cycling fitness and tackle some steep climbs ideally without electric assistance in the future

Electric Road Bike Guide

Electric Road Bike Guide

Is an Electric Road Bike Right for Me?

If you are new to the world of cycling and ebikes, our electric bike buyers guide will give you a good overview of the different types of e bikes. This will help you decide if an electric road bike is right for you.

The best electric bikes for road cycling combine a powerful motor with good road bike platform. When choosing a road e bike, there are a few things that can help you decide which performance characteristics you can expect from a particular model.

How do E Bikes Work?

All our ebikes are pedal assist models. This means that the electric motor adds to your natural pedalling power, making it easier to ride. The effect is seamless, and you will feel the extra boost from the first pedal stroke. The harder you pedal the more the power the motor gives you. When you stop pedalling the motor stops too.

You can vary the amount of power that the drive unit delivers when you pedal. All you need to do is select one of the different power modes using the display unit or power button. Some e bikes allow you to customize these modes through a smart phone app that connects to the bike through Bluetooth.

Road cyclist on an electric road bike

By law all pedal assist ebike are limited to only offer assistance up to 15.5mph. This means that you can ride an ebike everywhere that you can ride a regular bike. You can of course ride faster, but you will have to rely solely on your own natural pedalling power at speeds over 15.5mph.

Are the motors different?

Hub drive motors

Hub drive motors sit inside the wheel hub. These motors are lighter weight than crank drive units but are less powerful, and the power is applied more subtly. You still get enough power to climb the hills and accelerate from a standing start easily, and once up to speed these bikes are easier to pedal. Because they produce less power, hub drive ebikes tend to have smaller battery packs that can be hidden in the frame more easily.

Electric Road Bike Guide

Crank drive motors

Crank drives use a more powerful motor that sits in the bottom bracket area of the bike. The power is added directly to the drivetrain through the cranks. The added power is much more noticeable on a crank drive bike and you will be able to power up the climbs like a Pro athlete. Of course, you can always turn down the amount of power that the motor delivers. This means that you can extend the range and take advantage of the larger battery packs that these bikes are equipped with. Specialist road bike crank drive motors like the Specialized Turbo SL are designed to offer just the right amount of power. These are smaller and lighter than crank drives that are designed for multiple platforms.

Electric Road Bike Guide

Batteries

Most e bikes use a lithium Ion battery pack. These hold plenty of charge, offer long lasting performance and are quick to charge. The capacity of the battery varies depending on the model. Battery capacity starts at 250Wh for hub drive bikes and goes up to 500Wh or more on high-end crank drive bikes. The batteries can usually be charged both on and off the bike. A 500Wh battery pack will usually take about 4 hours to fully charge.

See how far you can ride an electric bike

Display and Connectivity

All ebikes have some type of display that allows you to swap between the different power modes. On some bikes the display is minimal with LED lights to show the remaining battery capacity and power modes. Others have screen that show additional ride data as well. The very best displays act like a high-end cycling computer.

Bosch Kiox display on an electric MTB

As well as the display unit many ebikes can also connect to a compatible smartphone app via Bluetooth. This opens up other options which may include GPS route planning and fine tuning of the power modes.

Which type of electric road bike is best for me?

Compared to mountain bikes road bikes have high cruising speeds. This means that the 15mph power assist limit needs more consideration with road e bikes. While a very powerful motor is great for getting up to speed and flying up the climbs you may find that the extra weight of a big motor and battery pack hold you back on the flat.

Hub drive road e bikes and lightweight crank drives like the Specialized Turbo SL are the best choice if you want the bike to feel similar to a regular road bike once you exceed the 15mph limit. These motors won’t get you up the climbs quite as fast as on a more powerful e bike, so if superfast climbing is your goal an e road bike with a more powerful crank drive motor might be best for you.
