Great bag for the money

Felt the need to write a review on this bag after reading what I would describe as an overly harsh review centered around the waterproofing of the zips, below. I've had two of these bags over the space of around 4 years, and find them to be incredibly well made for such a competitively priced product (vs. similar offerings from North Face etc that start around the £100 mark). I commute daily with mine and have nothing negative to say about it. It's a very simple bag, the main compartment is one large pocket with no laptop sleeve etc, and the front has the two smaller zip pockets. Personally I find this a positive thing, it keeps it light weight when I don't want to take much stuff, or I just put my laptop in a sleeve when I do want to take it. There's not really much else to say. It's great for keeping your change of clothes dry on a wet commute to work, which is all it needs to do. The white one (which I've always bought) is a great way to be seen on the roads without doing too much damage to your aesthetics. The grey strips are reflective, and the main white body itself is pretty bright when car headlights are behind you - I've seen one when cycling. Finally, the zips on the front pockets are exactly the quality you'd expect and do fine. They have the waterproof(ish) strip along them, like most rain shell jackets, but I guess due to the nature of them being horizontal then yes the water has more area to sit on as it rolls down the bag, which could lead to some beads getting in over time. I put my phone/wallet in them every day and haven't noticed an issue at all. If you're worried, just throw them in the main compartment or keep a sandwich bag in the front pocket for double security. Really not a reason to overlook the bag by any stretch. Overall, great product, and I'm surprised more cyclists aren't using them yet.

A non waterproof waterproof bag??

I got this bag for xmas 2017, great price and build quality looked brilliant. However, I came into big issues when it rained. The actual pockets on the outside of the bag aren't waterproof??!!! They let water in, i found out the hard way by having my pen drives in the small pocket, little did I know it was slowly filling up with water so the pen drives were swimming in water. Once waters in theres nowhere for it to go, same for the larger pocket and the phone got it this time. Totally unacceptable. I brought this up with Oxford themselves, they told me to double bag anything that goes in the pockets, what a stupid answer. The issue lies in the zips, they let water in pretty easy, especially as water just rolls off the bag outer and into the pockets via the zips. The water will just sit in the pockets, so no I don't use them and have to keep tipping the bag upsidedown and sponging the inside dry. Gutted, I have now resorted to gaffer tape across the zips, it looks totally rubbish. Oxford should address this with putting a storm flap above the zips so it cant run it. I feel like the bag isn't fit for purpose as a waterproof bag. I commute year round and do a fair bit of distance. I don't understand how reviews of this haven't brought this issue up already. Not a happy customer :( I cant recommend this product if the sole purpose is a bag that will keep your items dry, the main bag compartment is waterproof but wouldn't u think the pockets would be too.

Nice backpack

It's a really nice backpack especially in the wet. All my stuff is clean and dry. The bag itself has enough room inside, there is no divider so plenty of room for all your stuff. You can also attach your rear bike like

Cycle Backpacks Guide

Do I need a cycling backpack?

Cycling backpacks are designed to sit securely on your back while you ride. This is not always the case with non-cycling backpacks that may tend to wobble around as you ride. In addition to this cycling backpacks often have reflective strips and a rear light tab to improve night time visibility.

What size backpack do I need?

With capacities varying from 10 to 35 litres you will need to choose a cycling backpack that is right for the kind of cycling that you do most.

  • 10-19 litres – best for shorter rides and commuting with minimal kit
  • 20-29 litres – ideal for all day adventures and general commuting
  • 30+ litres – Good for touring and commuting with lots of kit

Can I use a hydration bladder with these backpacks?

While these cycling backpacks are not supplied with hydration bladders many of them have a bladder pocket ready to take one. Look for ‘Hydration bladder compatible’ in the product description.

Which are the best backpacks for commuting?

Hi-viz backpacks are designed specifically for urban riding so are ideal for commuting. Look for a backpack with reflective detailing and an integrated waterproof cover to keep out the elements.

Are cycling backpacks waterproof?

Some cycling backpacks are completely waterproof so you can ride all day in the rain while still keeping your kit dry.

Another option is a rain cover which will do a good job at keeping the water out. This is usually adequate protection for commuting and many cycling backpacks are supplied with them.  Waterproof backpack covers are also available separately.
