Shorts Guide

Why do I need cycle specific shorts?

If you've ever spent a long time in the saddle you'll know how uncomfortable wearing casual shorts can be. They chafe, fit poorly and offer little mobility. Cycling shorts make all the difference.

Padded Chamois

Most cycling shorts come with a padded insert known as a chamois. This insert relieves pressure in your sensitive areas and stops numbness.

Anatomical Cut

Bike shorts are anatomically designed, often with a longer and higher cut at the back for when you’re in a riding position. This means you have a far more comfortable ride.

Lycra shorts will be snug with some stretch for aero performance and mobility. Casual baggies offer maximum freedom of movement for demanding trail riding.

Technical Fabrics

Cycle shorts use performance fabrics such as lycra and nylon.

Lycra is quick wicking to help transfer moisture away from the body.

Nylon is bombproof for durable riding.

These fabrics offer some stretch for added mobility and flat stitching is smooth against your skin to reduce chafing.

Added features such as Teflon coating or Ripstop improve durability.

What types of shorts are available?

Lycra shorts | Ideal for road cycling

Lycra shorts (and bib shorts) offer the best comfort in the saddle. You wear these directly next to your skin – no underwear.

Lycra is quick drying and worn close against the skin meaning the chamois stays in place as you ride.

Leg grippers also help to keep the shorts in place.

Bib shorts | Ideal for road cycling

Bib shorts are similar to standard waist high lycra shorts. However, you also get supporting shoulder braces.

As there is no waist line to dig in to your stomach they are more comfortable. Bibs are pulled taught ensuring the chamois stays where you want it.

Baggy shorts | Ideal for mountain biking

Baggy shorts are popular because of the more casual style which also keeps your modesty in check.

Baggy shorts are more durable with fabrics designed not to rip and tear from branches or debris.

Slip knee pads under these shorts for extra protection. Plenty of pockets are ideal for stashing tools and nutrition.

Not all baggy shorts come with a pad but you can easily fit a pair of padded undershorts underneath.

Undershorts | Ideal for mountain biking

Undershorts are thin liners with an added chamois pads. Slip these under baggy or casual shorts extra comfort and protection in the saddle.
