Product Description

Whether you're fat biking or exploring in the backcountry this winter, you'll benefit from the fruits of our collaboration with 686. In this case, we're talking about the all-new 686 x Specialized Women's Tech Insulator.

Starting at the exterior, you'll find that the Tech Insulator is constructed from a woven fabric that's been given a DWR coating, making it water-resistant. Moving beyond this layer of the jacket, we've incorporated 100g Primaloft® insulation to keep you consistently warm both under effort and when relaxed. Primaloft® was chosen for its ultralight weight, breathability, pack-ability, and high warmth-to-weight ratio. Essentially, this all adds up to a dependable insulation layer that will never leave you feeling clammy or cold.

Furthering this, the jacket includes an adjustable hood for when conditions get particularly cold, as well as Lycra® wrist gaiters that interface perfectly with gloves. And knowing that this jacket will most likely be used in nasty conditions, it also features a foldout spray skirt and 3M® reflective trims that will increase your visibility to other riders and motorists in low-light conditions.

In terms of fit and feel, underarm stretch panels have been incorporated in order to promote a complete, uninhibited range of motion while riding or hiking the bike. It's also been given our Relaxed Fit, which means that it will fit loosely on the body to leave plenty of room for additional layers.

Storage of your ride essentials will be handled by internal mesh storage pockets, and there's also a SWAT™ access pocket at the rear for use with our SWAT™ bib shorts or other SWAT™-equipped pieces in the 686 x Specialized line of clothing.

Key Features:
  • Woven fabric with DWR treatment repels water, leaving you dry and comfortable without having to sacrifice breathability.
  • 100g Primaloft® insulation is ultra-lightweight, highly breathable, and quite efficient at trapping air to keep you warm and insulated from the elements.
  • Adjustable hood and hem provide added warmth and weather protection for your head, as well as minimizing the possibility of wind entering the Insulator.
  • Underarm stretch panels provide flexibility in the construction, allowing a full range of movement when you’re all zipped-up.
  • Lycra® wrist gaiters interface perfectly with gloves, which prevents any drafts or cold air from seeping in at the sleeve openings.
  • Internal mesh storage pocket safely and securely houses your ride essentials or nutrition.
  • 3M® reflective trims increase your visibility to other trail users or motorists in low-light conditions.
  • One zippered chest pocket and two front zippered pockets house your large and small ride essentials.
  • Fold out spray skirt allows you to block unwanted moisture at the hands of wheel-spray when you need to, and hide it away when you don’t.
  •  Rear SWATTM pocket access permits you to access your jersey or bib pockets easily with gloves on. Relaxed Fit is comfortable and loose against the body, allowing for ample layering underneath.

Windproof Jackets Guide

Windproof Jackets Guide

When the mercury drops most people turn to putting to layering up to keep warm. However, when you’re cycling the last thing you want is to feel like the Michelin man, bound up, inflexible and uncomfortable. As you ride you’ll get warm very quickly, wearing all those layers will make you sweaty.

Why not choose a windproof cycling jacket instead? They’re ideal for cold dry winter days with most offering some type of light rain protection as well. Windproof jackets tend to be lighter than a waterproof model and are much more breathable.

You can also check out our waterproof cycling jacket guide if you’re planning to ride in the rain. By the end of our windproof cycling guide, you should have all the info you need to buy the right jacket.

Types of Windproof Jacket

Packable Windproof Jacket
| Spring & Autumn

For cool rather than cold rides, a packable windproof jacket may be all you need to keep the chill off. These jackets are very lightweight and are usually made of a single layer of fabric. They’re only a simple barrier between your skin and the elements.

However, these jackets usually have good breathability to stop you from feeling clammy on the inside. Even if it rains, a packable will dry quickly. Most can be rolled up into a small package and will fit in a spare jersey pocket.

Lightweight windproof jacket

Softshell Windproof Jacket
| Spring, Autumn & Winter

Softshell windproof jackets have been gaining popularity for a few years now. They’re heavier than a packable to block more wind and are smooth against your skin for a comfortable feel.

Softshell jackets can be worn over a base layer or a jersey on colder rides without the need for multiple layers to keep you warm. Many are treated with water resistance for light rain protection making them a practical jacket for a wide range of UK riding conditions. You can also pair a softshell with a lightweight packable waterproof jacket for maximum protection.

Fabric

The fabric is key to performance. Generally, the more you spend on a jacket the lighter and thinner the fabric will be. Breathability will improve as well, letting your sweat evaporate quickly.

Gore Windstopper is popular fabric laminating a lightweight membrane to the fabric. It’s designed to keep the wind out and will also help shed light rain too.

Other systems will include an inner lining, middle windproof membrane and then the outer layer, usually treated with DWR water repellency. This design keeps the wind out while staying breathable.

We’ve put together a technical fabric guide for clothing detailing the key fabrics from some of the biggest brands in the industry.

Fit

Windproof jackets come in many styles, so choose the type best suited to your riding. If you plan on training or racing, then a tighter fit with minimal excess fabric will help prevent drag as you ride.

If you’re commuting or riding off-road then a loose cut with more freedom of movement is a good option.
