One of the most common mistakes with a new bike is cross threading a pedal, and it’s completely avoidable.
In this video, we’ll show you how to fit your pedals correctly and what to look out for to avoid damaging your bike.
1Identify Right and Left Pedals
Pedals are side-specific, so look for the L and R markings, the right pedal tightens clockwise, the left pedal tightens anticlockwise.
It’s really important to get this step right.
If pedals are fitted incorrectly, the threads will be damaged. This is called cross threading, and it can permanently damage the crank.
Note: All threads are checked before the bike leaves us, so any damage during fitting isn’t covered under warranty. So, it’s worth taking your time here.
2Attaching the pedals
A dab of grease on the threads is good practice before fitting the pedals.
Start by threading the right pedal in by hand, rotating the axle clockwise into the driveside crank arm, this is the easiest way to avoid cross threading.
Then move on to the left pedal. Thread the left pedal in by hand, rotating the axle anticlockwise into the non-driveside crank arm.
If you feel any resistance or grinding, stop and check, don’t force it.
Note: The left pedal tightens anticlockwise.
3Tighten
Once they are fitted correctly, tighten with a spanner or Allen key.
If you’re unsure at any point, it’s best to get help from someone experienced or a local workshop.
