Base Layer Guide
Base Layer Guide
When you’re wearing two or more clothing layers the base layer is the layer that is worn next to your skin. When you’re cycling the base layer absorbs and evaporates the sweat produced by your body as it warms up during your ride. This helps to keep you cool when you’re heating up on a big climb.
Base layers help to keep your skin dry so that you don’t get too cold when you’re cooling down on a descent or pit stop. Thermal base layers also help to keep you warm by trapping an insulating layer of warm air around your skin.
What to Look For
Seasonal Base Layers
Moisture management is important all-year-round so you can get base layers for every season. Summer base layers are made from very lightweight mesh fabrics that focus solely on wicking moisture away from the skin. Warm weather base layers are often sleeveless.
For cooler weather, a base layer made from thicker fabric is ideal as this will help to trap air against your skin for added insulation. When things get very cold base layers made from thermal fabrics with high-loft fleece lining are best.

Why is moisture-wicking important?
Wicking is the property of the fabric that moves moisture from one side of the garment to the other. This aids your body’s natural cooling mechanism by wicking sweat away from the skin so that it can evaporate taking your excess heat with it.
When cycling our bodies produce more sweat than usual, and it’s important that this sweat is moved away from your body so that it can evaporate easily. If your sweat is left wet against your skin, it will continue to cool you down when you don’t need it to and may give you a chill. Wet fabric is also less comfortable to wear and may cause chaffing.

Fit and cut
Offering a close figure-hugging fit base layers are like a stretchy second skin. Made from stretch fabric they should feel tight on your body but allow you to move freely without restriction. A baggy base layer won’t insulate you or move moisture away from your skin as well as a close-fitting garment. Base layers are designed to be tight-fitting, so there is no need to size down.
Good cycling base layers offer a tailored fit with flatlock stitching and/or a seamless design that prevents chaffing. Cold weather base layers have higher collars and long sleeves to help trap more air against your skin.

Fabric
Synthetic
Most cycling base layers are made with synthetic technical fabrics. These are quick-drying and high-wicking while also being lightweight and flexible. Some synthetic base layer fabrics also have thermoregulation properties to help keep you warm without overheating. Thermal base layers may feature brushed fleece against the skin to help keep you warm on cold rides.
The downside of synthetic materials is that they don’t have natural anti-bacterial properties, so they can get a bit smelly, especially after repeated use without washing.

Natural
Merino wool is an exceptionally good material for base layers. The wool is very warm, brilliantly breathable and most people find it feels soft and comfortable against the skin. Another advantage of Merino is its natural anti-bacterial qualities. This means that Merino base layers will resist odours, even after multiple wears without washing.
Unfortunately, some people find that Merino can be itchy, especially when they start to get sweaty. Most cyclists get on fine with Merino, but if you have very sensitive skin, you’re probably better off with synthetic materials.

Types of base layer
Short Sleeve
Sleeveless vest style base layers are best for warm weather cycling. These are usually made from very high wicking mesh fabrics that help your sweat evaporate quickly but don’t offer much extra warmth.
Short sleeve base layers are best for in-between conditions where you want a little extra warmth for your core. Some are made from very lightweight mesh materials, but most offer some extra thermal properties to help keep you warm on cooler rides.

Long Sleeve
Long sleeve base layers are designed to be worn under a long sleeve jersey and/or jacket. The Longer sleeves keep warmer blood flowing to your forearms, and then onto your hands; helping to keep this vital extremity warm and protected from the chill.

Arm Warmers
Arm warmers are a great way to shrug off the chill on those early morning rides. They effectively turn your short sleeve jersey into a long sleeve, but you can easily take them off and stash them in your pocket when the day warms up. Silicone bicep grippers help to keep them in place while reflective elements help you to be seen at night.

Leg Warmers
Leg warmers help to keep your legs warm when wearing shorts and are great for those cold starts as you can always take them off as you warm up later in the day. Silicone grip strips on the thigh help to keep the warmers in place while you pedal and reflective elements add visibility in low light conditions.
Full-length leg warmers cover your whole leg from the top of your thighs to your ankles and are best for colder rides. Knee warmers cover your knees from the hem of your shorts to your mid-calf which makes them better for changeable conditions as they are easier to take off mid-ride.
