Marin DSX 1 2024 - Gravel Bike
Price: £899.00

Hopping up to a higher-spec Series 3 aluminum frame, the Marin DSX 1 has a whole heap of upgrades over the base spec version. Bolt-thru axles add stiffness and a carbon fork drops the weight and adds even more mounting points for bikepacking bags.

Coming from riding pretty much only full sus MTB's (the odd hardtail apart) decided to go for the DSX via Cycle to Work scheme to actually use to ride to work on. Previously used my MTB's to commute on and decided it was time to get something a bit better suited to the job, so this review is based on first few commutes around 10 miles each way, flat route, few other short rides on old railway type paths. I wanted the DSX 2 but no stock available at time of purchase, the DSX 1 seemed to fit the bill and spec was good enough spec wise for what I require. First few rides and can't really fault it, im 5'9" and every MTB I've owned has been a medium frame and perfect fit, was happy to order this in a medium without trying it as Marin's size guide also said medium, would advise anyone to go to shop and try first it is definitely small for a medium. Before I even got the bike I was going to order a smaller stem and some riser bars to have similar fit to my other bikes, this bike has a short reach not sure I could fit a shorter stem than stock. Other than that it's a nippy little thing, very responsive and changes direction quickly, stops well enough once brakes have bedded in. Not used to riding a fully rigid bike so can't say it's comfortable but stock seat is comfy enough. When researching I knew the stock tyres are not tubeless so order some Maxxis tyres as always run tubeless setups, turns out it's not just the tyres the actual rims are not tubeless compatible by all accounts, so far with tape applied they have been ok but do lose some air. So overall it is a very well put together bike for the money, the frame set and forks are really good quality and worthy of upgrading the bits that let the DSX 1 down a little. On that note the bottom bracket is a press fit and probably not the best quality, the 1x11 is fine for what I need and shifts smoothly, any one facing big climbs may appreciate a 1x12. Wheels are definitely at budget end, can't comment on supplied WTB tyres. Brakes are perfectly up to the job but my those levers are long. Lockon grips would of been a nice touch but easy and cheap to replace. Seat post may require shortening depending on height as tube limits how low it can go. I would highly recommend if your budget goes to the DSX 2 it would be a much better purchase, but with with a few little upgrades when things wear out im sure this bike will last for many miles and many years. Light fast and nimble, nice colour too! Bike came fully built from Tredz and was spot on.
