Great value for money

I had been looking for something a little more off road capable after using an aluminium framed hybrid for touring / bike packing previously. The bikes that seemed to fit the bill were coming in at around £1500 or higher and still didn't tick every box in what I was looking for, so I was more than a little surprised to see this bike at nearly half the price, with an almost perfect spec (tubeless ready wheels would have been nice if your reading this Marin). Once on the bike I have been constantly impressed with the bike and what it is capable of, from road riding, commuting and a few short test ride bike packing trips it has handled the lot. In the past I was restricted to the routes I could take on my ride to work, now I can pop through local single track trails and rough gravel roads, arriving in work far happier than I used to! The stock WTB tyres are good and grippy in the rough stuff and roll well on the road but after 600 miles were wearing a little quicker than I would have liked, swapping them out for a pair of Panaracer Gravelking SK 700x43 has fixed that problem without losing too much off road grip (though I will keep my WTB's for days strictly on dirt). The Sora groupset is nice and shifts well especially for what is essentially something at the budget end of the Shimano range. The TRP Spyre brakes are solid and very easy to maintain with a really great range of adjustment available making a very short pull brake lever easily achievable, the stock pads could be a little better maybe but they are wearing well and I will maybe experiment with something grippier in future. I can't comment on the stock saddle as I swapped it out for a fabric cell radius (the devil you know), but the supplied WTB model does seem to be very well made and looks much better than ones that have come with bikes I have bought in the past. The supplied bar tape is good and grippy with a good amount of cushioning from bumps and vibration, when I need to replace it I will be looking for the same again. The build quality seems very good so far, the bike requiring nothing more than the usual maintenance after about 1000 miles riding so far. I did invest in some frame protection tape as I think bike packing bags may destroy the paintwork. In summary, for the money you spend this is a very capable, well equipped bike that will handle pretty much anything you care to throw at it, I'm looking forward to riding even more miles on it.

Ive found my bike for life

A bike that does pretty much everything and feels good doing it. I love the geometry with the high front end. It is a little heavy but it's not really noticeable once on the move. It does feel like a 90's mtb (in a good way). It's very comfortable with the frame being slightly springy. Gears are faultless in shifting, but could perhaps be lower for off road. The brakes are excellent, in every way (so far). My only niggles are the bottle cage positioning. The main two (out of 6 possible locations!) are too close which leads to rattles on rough roads. Also, front one near the BB location can foul the mudguard if a regular bottle is used, I plan to use this for stove fuel. This bike was an investment for me and I'm extremely pleased with it, if I'd known you could buy a bike this good for such little money I'd have done it a while ago, having said that a bike like this wasn't available for this price, the most likely contenders being the Genesis vagabond and the salsa Fargo. Both of these are probably more suited to rough off road than the Marin, but the Marin is excellent in all other environments. I consider its non flashy understated looks a positive as less likely to attract attention of the wrong kind. I was saving to get a four corners for a while, then they completely changed the frame etc, but I'm glad I waited and got this version with its higher front end.

A great all rounder

Had this bike for a year and it does everything from commuting, bikepacking, gravel riding and some mountain biking. The bike takes up to a 2.1 tyre, and the brakes are very good and easy to maintain, the bike is very comfortable on the longer rides but is a bit on the heavy side.Check out Marin's video on you tube of this bike
