Cages Guide

Cages Guide

If you want to carry a water bottle on your bike then the best, most secure and easiest way is to use a dedicated bottle cage.

A bottle cage mounts to the two bolts on your frame. These bottle cage bolts are a standard distance apart, meaning any bottle cage will fit your bike so long as you have those two bolts usually found on the downtube, but sometimes bikes can also have them on the seat tube.

Bottle Cages

A bottle cage securely holds a cycling bottle to your bike. They are usually made from a type of plastic, though there are carbon fibre options for those looking to shave grams from their bike. There are also metal options available, these are strong and sturdy and can even be made of stainless steel or lightweight titanium.

A bottle cage has a standard size that fits all bikes with bottle cage bosses. A cycling bottle also has a standard size, meaning any cycling water bottle will fit any cycling bottle cage. Though there are better and worse combinations out there, the best chance of getting a tight and secure fit is to match the brand of the bottle with the brand of the cage. For example, a Specialized bottle will fit very well in a Specialized bottle cage.

Storage Cages

Some cages are not made to fit a standard bottle but are made to store larger items. Some bikes include bosses on the fork legs or under the downtube, these can be used to fit a storage cage.

These cages differ as they use an open design that does not restrict the cage to only holding a cycling bottle, they will use straps to secure the item to the cage. Some use these cages to fit oversized water bottles that would not fit in a standard cage or to secure a small dry bag containing clothing, food or other equipment to their bike. They can be a simple and neat way to add storage options to your bike for touring or bikepacking trips.

Left or right hand

Some cages have left or right-hand options, these cages are known as sideloading. A sideloading cage often gives a tighter grip on the bottle as the cage wraps around the top of the bottle and can only be removed from one side. Mountain bikers will find a sideloading cage beneficial as it provides better security over rough terrain and allows the bottle to fit in a frame with not much clearance around the bottle.

A right-hand cage will mean it can be used by your right hand when in the standard position on the down tube of the bike and left-handed with a left-hand cage. But please note, when these cages are mounted on the seat tube, the hand is reversed. A right-hand cage mounted on the seat tube becomes a left-handed cage and vice versa, so please look at where you will mount the cage before choosing left or right-handed.

Cage spares and accessories

There are many spares and accessories available for bike cages. One of the easiest ways to personalise your bike is with colour coded bottle cage bolts, some bottle cages can mount and house multi-tools, hand pumps or C02 cartridges.

Other accessories allow you to alter the position of the cage. Some simply move the bolt position up or down giving clearance around bags or in small frames or frame designs that give little room. Others allow you to move the mounts left and right around the tube for even more versatile clearance solutions.
