Very good flexible kit

Does as described and will work around disc brakes etc. Seems well made. Can also be used without the skewer if needed on a bike with fixings so very flexible. Came with range of fixings e.g. 2x P clips etc so more than expected.

didn't fit my bike

This rack makes use of an extended skewer to be the main attachment. However, although my bike has disc brakes it doesn't have a skewer so I have to devise an alternative method of securing it to the frame. The design looks good and so I am energised to persevere. Consequently I have been unable to comment on the performance aspect of this carrier yet.

Adjustable fittings

My 26" Orange frame MTB with disc brakes has no lugs on it at all. I was going to buy an "extended skewer and bracket kit" so I could fix a conventionally fitted pannier rack - BUT - this skewer mounted rack comes with its own long skewer, saving me £20 for a start. The Blackburn Pannier also came with sufficient brackets and bits so the top stay would also fit without lugs - the brackets provided would fit two tube sizes. I chose however to use the seat post QR clamp to anchor the top stays (not bothering with the tube clamps) - I had to do some bending of the stays, but what a first class job. The rack is fitted neatly & securely. The actual construction of the rack is robust to say the least - yet still lightweight. I'm really pleased with it. The overall cost is half what I would have paid for a conventionally fitted rack. I've also bought the same model of rack for my wife's MTB, again it's an Orange Frame without lugs. The bikes is still a 26" but with a smaller frame. Again I fitted the top stays to the QR seat post clamp. I had to bend them at a different angle to that on my larger bike - but still a very neat and secure job! Tredz delivery was spot on. N.B. I've only given the rack it 4 stars for performance 'cause I'll give it a full year in use before I dare give it 5 star.

Skewer not long enough

The rack arrived. Very quickly, but when I tried to fit it to my tandem I found that the quick release skewer was not long enough for my bike by about 10mm. I require 230 mm between the ends. It seems impossible to buy a long enough skewer in Britain. I think my bike, a dawes double edge tandem, is rather unusual.

Bike Racks Guide

What is a bike rack?

A bike rack is a great way of carrying your luggage around on your bike, making them perfect for commuting, touring or family adventures. The rack fits securely to your bike, eliminating the need for a rucksack to burden your back. Racks are easily fitted and removed, so they don’t have to stay in place all the time.

Who needs a bike rack?

Anyone who carries luggage. Whether you’re cycling to work, sightseeing or having a few days away, bike racks are ideal for bearing the brunt of the load. A bike rack is also a great idea for those who suffer from back pain or that find rucksacks uncomfortable.

What are the choices?

There are two locations for bike racks, at the front and rear of your bike. Both can be used to carry luggage. Choose from strong, durable material that is as light as possible. You’ll also need to check that the rack will fit to your bike without getting in the way of any of the components.

What should I buy with it?

The choice of accompanying baggage is endless. Pick from a small, compact bag for occasional jaunts, double panniers for a weekend away or multi-compartment bag to keep yourself organised.

Anything else?

Check the load capacity of your rack – you don’t want to set off and leave a trail of spilt luggage in your wake. Or worse, damage your bike because you’ve packed everything AND the kitchen sink.
