Product Description

The original Boardman SLR 8.9 Carbon was our most popular carbon road bike, and for good reason. We think the light, stiff and comfortable carbon frame designed with aerodynamic tube profiles and features is a perfect platform for all-round road riding, and the reviewers agreed with us. For most bike brands, 4.5 out of 5 reviews and comments like “Blimey, what a corker!” (road.cc) would be a reason to kick back and celebrate a job well done. However, at Boardman, we are always looking for ways we can push our bikes to the next level, and this is what we have done for the new SLR 8.9 Carbon.

Key Features:

  • Carbon frame with aero features for extra speed
  • Carbon fork for a smooth ride
  • Shimano 105 2x11 speed drivetrain
  • Comfortable and efficient contact points
  • Colour: Black/Blue
  • Sizes: Small, Medium, Large, X Large
  • The Boardman SLR 8.9 is available with 0% APR finance

One of the only criticisms we could level at the old bike was the 10 speed gears – functional, but a little heavy and unrefined. With that in mind, we’ve upgraded the shifting to Shimano’s 11 speed R7000 105. Offering smooth gear changes, reduced weight, ergonomic design and all the trickle-down technology from Shimano’s flagship Dura-Ace groupset, 105 is a fantastic performer.

Not only have we upgraded the bike’s gearing – but we’ve also worked with expert bike fitters to ensure the touchpoints on the bike are going to suit riders even better than before.

FRAMESET:

The new SLR 8.9c frame and fork use the same aerodynamic design and geometry as the top of the range SLR 9.6 and so delivers outstanding performance. The dropped seat stays and an integrated seat clamp help reduce drag and combine with carefully designed carbon fibre layup to deliver all day long comfort. This isn’t achieved at the expense of speed though. Using CFD and wind tunnel testing, our tube profiles deliver a significant aero boost compared to previous frames, and a stiff bottom bracket and light overall weight mean that the bike responds instantly when you put the power down. With clearance for up to 28mm tyres and hidden mudguard mounts, the SLR 8.9 Carbon can turn its hand to any type of road riding, whatever the weather.

CONTACT POINTS:

Working with Chris Boardman, data from hundreds of bike fits and insight from bike fit experts, we have made simple changes to the contact points of the SLR range. Using advanced pressure mapping and real-world testing we’ve shown that the Boardman SLR saddle will provide long-ride comfort for the majority of people. Bar width and crank length are also reduced vs previous bikes to make sure they are suited to the fit needs of real cyclists, not just based on old traditions. These changes also reduce the rider’s frontal area, which has been wind tunnel tested to reduce drag, meaning less effort required for the same speed.

Key Features:

  • Shimano 105 11 speed shifters and derailleurs ensure crisp and easy gear changes
  • A compact 50/34 chainset with 11-30 cassette offers a wide spread of gears for climbing and descending
  • Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Graphene 2.0 tyres combine great grip with puncture protection and low rolling resistance
  • Boardman SLR Wheels are tubeless-ready, so can be easily upgraded to run without tubes
  • Tektro R315 long drop brakes give clearance for up to 28mm tyres, or to run mudguards with 25mm

Occasionally, without notice, manufacturers change product design and/or specifications.

Excellent Customer Experience

Boardman 8.9 SLR 2021 The bike is very light weight, the attention to detail from boadman is fantastic. All the way down to the raised feel of the graphics and decals on the paint work. Pictures do not do the paint and colour any justice, they are much nicer in the flesh. The addition of 105 is a nice touch giving you a full 22 gears, although it's a shame the brake calipers and front crank aren't 105 to match. This is the first bike I've ordered from Tredz. Very impressed with level of service and build quality. The supplied tools and free bag are a nice touch. The bike was packaged very well, all necessary components and frame were padded out. The bike arrived all one peice in a large easy to carry box.

Great bike
by Anonymous user on 22/08/2020

Great bike, great service. Really enjoy this bike, very good value for the money. The bike rides well, the stiff frame does feel like when you push on the pedals the bike responds well. Gearing is nice. Wouldn't mind a 32t rear sprocket but 30t is fine. Tredz set it up properly as well (greased the bolts etc.) Which was great.

Frame Material

The vast majority of road bikes are made from either aluminium alloy or carbon fibre. Alloy bikes can offer higher tier groupsets for a lower price, whereas carbon frames come at a significant premium, but are lighter and give that extra performance advantage.

Aluminium

Aluminium alloy frames
Alloy frames have come a long way recently, using hydroforming and butting to keep the weight low, while keeping stiffness high.

Carbon fibre

Carbon fibre composite frames
Carbon frames have a lighter weight and greater stiffness, while maintaining excellent comfort.

Fork

Road bike forks are made to be lightweight and stiff, giving accurate steering, as well as a comfortable ride. Budget road bikes will have alloy forks, whereas mid-range forks often have mix-material forks, with alloy steerer tubes and carbon fork blades. Carbon bladed forks deliver a more comfortable ride, absorbing road vibrations and flexing slightly in rough roads. Full carbon forks are found on high end road bikes. They are especially lightweight and offer even greater stiffness.

Groupset

A bike’s groupset, or drivetrain, is where the biggest difference in component quality is seen. A complete groupset comprises of the following parts:

  • Chainset (aka Crankset)
  • Bottom bracket
  • Brakes
  • Brake levers
  • Shifters
  • Front & rear derailleur
  • Chain
  • Cassette

Road groupsets are supplied by Shimano, SRAM or Campagnolo. Having reliable and fast shifting can make all the difference when pushing hard. The majority of road bikes have double chainring drivetrains, while triple chainring setups are usually only found on low end bikes and touring bikes. Road bikes will have 7-12 speeds in the rear, with higher gears meaning more options for smoother riding.

Brakes

Disc Brakes

Disc brakes
Disc brakes offer greater stopping power and modulation. They work as well in wet as dry weather, and don’t require the rims to be replaced periodically. They come at a weight penalty, however.

Calliper Rim Brakes

Calliper rim brakes
Rim brakes are lightweight and easy to maintain. They allow greater aerodynamics for aero road bikes and

Wheels & Tyres

Types of tyres

Road bikes tyres don’t vary as much as mountain bike or even hybrid, but they still make a huge difference to how the bike rides. For a detailed look into road bike tyres, see our guide.

Road tyres have long been offered as either clincher or tubular. Clincher tyres are the standard tyres that fit onto standard rims with a tube holding the air. Tubular tyres are glued to a special tubular rim and are fully encased, doing without a tube.

Tubeless tyres are now a feature of road bikes, delivering a compromise between tubular and clincher tyres. They look the same as clincher tyres, but pair up with special rims to offer a proper seal within the tyres, also doing away with tubes.

Tyre Size

Road tyres are traditionally quite narrow. Nowadays the accepted standard is 25c, but 23c and 28c tyres are very common too. The larger the size tyre, the more comfortable they will be, but they will also be heavier and potentially slower rolling. Sportive and flat bar road bikes will commonly have wider tyres, whereas race and aero road bike will tend towards narrower tyres.
