Do I need a cycling backpack?

Cycling backpacks are designed to sit securely on your back while you ride. This is not always the case with non-cycling backpacks that may tend to wobble around as you ride. In addition to this cycling backpacks often have reflective strips and a rear light tab to improve night time visibility.

What size backpack do I need?

With capacities varying from 10 to 35 litres you will need to choose a cycling backpack that is right for the kind of cycling that you do most.

10-19 litres – best for shorter rides and commuting with minimal kit
20-29 litres – ideal for all day adventures and general commuting
30+ litres – Good for touring and commuting with lots of kit

Can I use a hydration bladder with these backpacks?

While these cycling backpacks are not supplied with hydration bladders many of them have a bladder pocket ready to take one. Look for ‘Hydration bladder compatible’ in the product description.

Which are the best backpacks for commuting?

Hi-viz backpacks are designed specifically for urban riding so are ideal for commuting. Look for a backpack with reflective detailing and an integrated waterproof cover to keep out the elements.

Are cycling backpacks waterproof?

Some cycling backpacks are completely waterproof so you can ride all day in the rain while still keeping your kit dry.

Another option is a rain cover which will do a good job at keeping the water out. This is usually adequate protection for commuting and many cycling backpacks are supplied with them. Waterproof backpack covers are also available separately.
