Cyclocross speed

Great performance and good value. If they were tubeless, they would be perfect.

Excellent tyres

We have these on our cyclocross bikes and love them. Just bought 2 more for my daughter's bike as they are really versatile. They manage gravel and mucky tracks but roll fast on Tarmac. Not the most puncture resistant but comfortable ride. Can't have it all.

Good grippy tyre but a little puncture prone

I have had these tyres on the bike for around 1,000 miles in all conditions including wet grass, light mud, ice and of course dry and wet tarmac. The tyre performs well with good reliable traction in most conditions. On ice / snow going up hill I found the rear tyre .momentarily lost traction but then again it is not a studded tyre and I must say that I was impressed at the performance in these conditions. On tarmac the tyre is faultless eating up the miles with zero fuss. Off road light mud is no problem but as it gets thicker the lack of nobbels begins to tell with the tyre sliding. Also climbing out of ruts, is slightly compromised due to the smooth nature of the tyre. I am however now planning to take change these tyres off the bike as I have had five or six punctures since I have had these tyres on the bike so clearly not ideal for the urban trails that I cycle on with a mix of broken bottles and hawthorn hedge trimmings.

From a brand you can trust.

I'm in no way an expert in Cyclocross things including tyres any bigger than 25mm but when it came to dipping my toe into CX I wanted a road going tyre to get used to the bike. Continental is my go to brand for the last 3 years so this tyre was the obvious choice. My gut instinct and bit of research didn't disappoint. I've done 100 miles on these in 3 rides. Ride 1 was patchy ice, ride 2 was wet and ride 3 was wet, windy and hilly. I had 100% confidence throughout. On the first ride I was slow into the wet corners but this morning I was bombing down decents and taking the corners in my stride. Almost inaudible rumble from the tread which is a big plus. Took a farm lane with loose gravel and potholes and at 40 psi it was a rather comfy experience with no issues. I'm highly recommending these to anyone looking for a cheap, well built and reliable tyre. As for anything more than gravel I really don't know but it's worth a go, if not I'll just get a set with more nobbles.

Good All Round Tyre

I hadn't written the review before as I wanted to test what they were like the punctures. 6 Months down the line and no punctures (14 mile commute each way) This tyres are very light and fast on the road and give you sufficient grip offroad to have confidence in not losing the front. Great Comuter Tyre!!

Good on and off road

Use these mainly on road, but some longer rides off road in the dry and they cope well.

Good on and off road tyres for hybrids

I wanted some tyres that would work equally well off-road as they do on and these seemed to fit the bill. I've not fitted them yet but they look like they'll give both the grip I need on tow paths etc yet not have too much rolling resistance on the road. Could be good for winter road grip. Not sure how puncture proof they'll be though as there doesn't seem to be a protective layer.

How to check your current tyre size?

Take a look at the sidewall of your current tyres and you’ll see one or two sets of figures;

One is the traditional size like 700x28c or 27.5x2.2. The first figure is the tyre diameter(size). The second is tyre width. Note: road bike sizes are in mm, MTB sizes are in inches.

The other set of figures you may see is ETRTO sizing like this 28-622. The first number here is tyre width while the second number relates to wheel diameter.

Here is a comparrison chart for traditional and ETRTO sizing to help you choose the correct tyre size.

ETRTO Number Dimension

18-622 700 x 18C
23-622 700 x 23C

Will this tyre fit my wheel?

Your new tyre must be the same diameter as your current one (to fit your wheel rim).

Then, you need a choose a tyre which will fit your frame.

Road bike tyres are generally 21 – 28mm wide

MTB tyres can range from 1.5”-5”

To make things complicated road tyres are measured in mm, while MTB tyres are in inches.

How wide is too wide

You want to leave at least 4mm clearance between your frame and tyres to prevent rub and allow for mud clearance.

Measure the following areas on your frame:

Fork crown (top)

Brake calipers (make sure you squeeze them)

Chainstays

Seatstays

Subtract 4mm and you’ll have the maximum width your frame can handle.

Continental Cyclocross Tyre Guide

With over 100 years of manufacturing experience Continental cyclocross tyres offer the performance you need to ride challenging terrain. See the range of technologies that give their cyclocross tyres a performance edge.

Compounds

Black Chili Compound

Black Chili is Continental’s premium rubber compound for both road and mountain bike tyres. It offers more grip with less rolling resistance and even lasts longer than other rubber compounds.

Pure Grip Compound

Pure Grip is a performance rubber compound that sits just below Black Chili. An Activated Silica rubber compound, Pure grip offers excellent traction, is also long lasting and highly durable. Used on both road and mountain bike tyres, Pure Grip is produced in Continental’s Chinese factory.

Tyre Types & Protection

RaceSport

Designed for cross-country mountain bike racing, RaceSport tyres feature a lightweight carcass made with resilient fabric casing that offers improved protection against flat tyres. RaceSport tyres are hand made in Germany with a particularly fine and high-grade nylon fabric with an expensive, protective rubber lining and a universal bead. With 30% better puncture protection than Supersonic tyres and Black Chili rubber these are the tyres you need for XC and Marathon MTB racing.

NyTech Breaker

Sitting between the SafetySystem and PolyX Breaker, NyTech offers more effective puncture protection for performance tyres. The Nylon fabric is highly resistant to cuts and punctures but offers low rolling resistance and reduced weight.
