Long Sleeve Base Layer Guide

Long Sleeve Base Layer Guide

Worn next to your skin under a jersey and/or a jacket long sleeve base layers form the foundation of your cycling wear. Base layers have two essential properties that make them such useful clothing items for cyclists.

Moisture management: Made from high wicking fabric base layers move sweat away from your skin to help it evaporate efficiently. This helps to keep you cool when you are working hard on the climbs. It also helps to keep your skin dry, so you don’t get chilled on the descents.

Insulation: Base layers trap an extra layer of air next to your skin to help to keep you warm. Thicker thermal fabrics trap more air than thinner fabrics so they will offer more insulation.

What to Look For

Seasonal Base Layers

Moisture management is important all-year-round so you can get base layers for every season. For cool weather, a standard base layer made from medium weight fabric is ideal as this will help to trap air against your skin for added insulation without making you too warm.

When things get very cold base layers made from thicker thermal fabrics with high-loft fleece lining are best. Summer base layers are made from very lightweight mesh fabrics that focus solely on wicking moisture away from the skin.

Why is moisture-wicking important?

Wicking is the property of the fabric that moves moisture from one side of the garment to the other. This aids your body’s natural cooling mechanism by wicking sweat away from the skin so that it can evaporate taking your excess heat with it.

When cycling our bodies produce more sweat than usual, and it’s important that this sweat is moved away from your body so that it can evaporate easily. If your sweat is left wet against your skin, it will continue to cool you down when you don’t need it to and may give you a chill. Wet fabric is also less comfortable to wear and may cause chaffing.

Material choice

The fabric that the base layer is made from varies with the intended purpose of the garment. Most long sleeve base layer materials offer good insulation for extra warmth while also offering very good wicking properties to help keep you cool and dry when you sweat. Lightweight mesh materials are very high wicking but offer minimal insulation. Wind proof fabrics offer a barrier against cold air but they’re not so efficient at wicking moisture away from the skin.

Some base layers combine these materials. For example: mesh panels on the back combined with insulating fabrics on the rest of the garment make the garment increase moisture wicking where you need it most while still keeping the rest of your body.

Fit and cut

Offering a close figure-hugging fit base layers are like a stretchy second skin. Made from stretch fabric they should feel tight on your body but allow you to move freely without restriction. A baggy base layer won’t insulate you or move moisture away from your skin as well as a close-fitting garment. Base layers are designed to be tight-fitting, so there is no need to size down.

Good cycling base layers offer a tailored fit with flatlock stitching and/or a seamless design that prevents chaffing. Cold weather base layers have higher collars and long sleeves to help trap more air against your skin.

Most cycling base layers are made with synthetic technical fabrics. These are quick-drying and high-wicking while also being lightweight and flexible. Some synthetic base layer fabrics also have thermoregulation properties to help keep you warm without overheating. Thermal base layers may feature brushed fleece against the skin to help keep you warm on cold rides.

The downside of synthetic materials is that they don’t have natural anti-bacterial properties, so they can get a bit smelly, especially after repeated use without washing.

Merino wool is an exceptionally good material for base layers. The wool is very warm, brilliantly breathable and most people find it feels soft and comfortable against the skin. Another advantage of Merino is its natural anti-bacterial qualities. This means that Merino base layers will resist odours, even after multiple wears without washing.

Unfortunately, some people find that Merino can be itchy, especially when they start to get sweaty. Most cyclists get on fine with Merino, but if you have very sensitive skin, you’re probably better off with synthetic materials.

Other types of base layer

We're featuring long sleeve base layers her but shorts sleeves and vests are also available adn may be a better choice for certain conditions.

Short Sleeve Base Layers

Sleeveless vest style base layers are best for warm weather cycling. These are usually made from very high wicking mesh fabrics that help your sweat evaporate quickly but don’t offer much extra warmth.

Short sleeve base layers are best for in-between conditions where you want a little extra warmth for your core. Some are made from very lightweight mesh materials, but most offer some extra thermal properties to help keep you warm on cooler rides.
