Chainring Guide
Chainring Guide
Chainrings are the link between your cranks and your chain. They come in many different sizes and bolt patterns to match the many different types of cranks available. The larger a chainring, the harder the gear, and conversely, the smaller the chainring, the easier the gear.
Most modern mountain bikes now use just one chainring, knows as one by or 1x. Most road bikes use two chainrings, known as double or 2x. There are also triple or 3x setups available. Hybrid bikes can use either road or mountain bike gearing. In this guide, we will show the things to note when upgrading or replacing your chainrings. If not attached directly to the centre of the crankset axle, chainrings will mount to a spider. This spider can be different sizes depending on the crankset, known as BCD. The spider can also use different amounts of bolts to secure the chainring.
Narrow/Wide chainrings
Modern mountain bikes, many gravel bikes and now even some road bikes have only a single chainring. With the advent of very large cassettes, it is possible to get the range of gears once offered by a double chainring crankset with a single chainring setup.
There are many advantages to using only a single chainring. There is less weight as there is no need for a second chainring, a front derailleur, or a front shifter. There is also the practical advantage with fewer components there is less to go wrong or maintain. The key to a 1x drivetrain is the use of a narrow/wide chainring.

A narrow/wide chainring uses alternating narrow and wide teeth that grip the chain onto the chainring. This technology has almost eliminated dropped chains. Most riders will not use a chain device as the chain retention is so secure. Please note a narrow/wide chainring will only work with a 1x set up. The narrow/wide teeth that grip the chain will not allow the chain to shift to a second chainring. double and triple chainrings have ramps built in to aid with shifting.
Double and Triple Chainrings
Double and triple chainrings are specific to their use and include ramped sections around the ring that help guide the chain either up or down onto the next cog when pushed by the derailleur.
Some chainsets have one bolt area that mounts both chainrings with the same bolts. Others have one bolt area for the outer and another smaller bolt area for the inner chainring. When replacing, please ensure that the replacement is for a double or triple crankset to ensure compatibility, along with the correct BCD and amount of arms on the spider.

Oval Chainrings
Oval chainrings are designed to create a smooth power delivery and increase your pedalling effectiveness. Oval chainrings maximize the part of the stroke where power is produced and minimize resistance where it isn't. Riders who spend a lot of time climbing will feel the advantages of using an oval chainring.

Riders that use a double chainset can use two oval chainrings or just the one. For example, some riders might want an oval outer ring with a standard round inner. It is recommended to purchase an oval chainring with the same teeth as your prefered round chainring. Again BCD and bolt count govern the compatibility of an oval ring with your crankset. Oval chainrings are now available in most common sizes.
BCD and Direct Mount
Before choosing your next chainring, you will need to know the BCD (sometimes known as PCD) and how the chainring is attached. Firstly look at how the chainring is attached, does it use bolts, if so how many. If it does not use bolts, then it will be a direct mount chainring.
Once you know the number of bolts then you will need to know the BCD of the chainring. BCD is the distance between the bolts, please also note if there is a symmetrical bolt pattern or an asymmetrical bolt pattern. For example, chainrings for a Shimano 105 R7000 road chainset use four-bolt asymmetrical 104 BCD chainrings.

Direct mount chainrings do not use a spider or bolts to attach the chainring. The chainring mounts directly to compatible cranks. Each crank manufacturer has a different pattern to the direct mount spline and is unique to the manufacturer. For example, a RaceFace direct-mount chainring will only fit RaceFace cranks. A direct mount chainring cannot be mounted to a crank that does not support direct mount.
