Product Description

Your any weather wet lube :
  • Penetrates
  • Lubricates
  • Protects
  • Prevents rust

Green Oil chain lube was developed in 2007, and is the country's if not the World's first biodegradable bike chain lube. It lasts in excess of 100 miles on the chain per application (depending on conditions) and has won a wealth of awards - from environmentalists and the bike industry alike.

Green Oil has an easy to use 'snap cap' Simply twist and pull off in one go. It has a fantastic long nozzle, easy to get to hard to reach areas.

Green Oil chain lube now contains N-Toc, a special refined plant extract to increase durability, increasing the length of time between applications.

Green Oil can also be used for cables, brake leavers, bike locks and for other lube applications. Its versatile. We don't want to encourage too much flying - climate change being a problem of course, but if you do need to take a plane you an take Green Oil with you. Green Oil is within the 100ml fluid limit, so you can even take it in your hand luggage (for a cheeky bit of on plane bike maintenance perhaps!).

Why use chain oil?

  • A chain can be over 99% efficient in transferring energy from your pedalling to kinetic energy to drive the bike forward.
  • Friction occurs between links, and lubricating the chain reduces this - increasing efficiency.
  • Also, your bike chain is exposed to the elements: water + steel = rust. Rust = reduced efficiency (and harder pedalling!)
  • Rust and wear due to friction also reduce the life of your bike chain. Green Oil chain lube reduces both, extending the life of your chain, and reducing friction, for a smoother ride.
How to apply :
  1. Ensure your bike is secure
  2. Preferably clean the chain first, and dry. (A wipe down with a rag is better than nothing)
  3. Work out how many times you need to spin the cranks for one chain circulation - Slowly turn the cranks backwards, watching a single chain link go all the way around.
  4. Apply Green Oil to the top part of the bottom half of the chain (if that doesn't make sense, hopefully the diagram below does!). Apply to one length of the chain. Apply to the 'rollers', the cylinders on the chain.
  5. Carefully spin the cranks a few times.
  6. Wipe off excess from the outside of the chain with a rag. Its most important to have lube between the links of the chain, rather than on the outside.
NB. If there is snow, we recommend not doing part 6, and putting two layers of Green Oil on, ensuring the whole chain is coated. Salt on the roads means you need extra protection, as salt causes rust- so lots and lots of chain oil is a good thing in these conditions. Generally though a thin layer is cleaner and more efficient.

Occasionally, without notice, manufacturers change product design and/or specifications.

Lube & Cleaners Guide

Lubrication and cleaners Guide

If you want your bike to be running as well as it can, then you must keep it clean and maintain it to as high a standard as you can. A clean bike is faster, smoother, quieter and all parts will last longer than those on a dirty bike. After cleaning make sure you take the time to lube up the chain and reapply any grease if doing a full strip-down.

Regularly cleaning your bike allows you to notice any areas that need attention, any parts that need adjustment, or any broken parts that need replacing. With dedicated cleaning products, it's much easier and faster than you might think.

Bike Cleaners

Bike cleaners like Muc-Off make cleaning your bike much easier. The cleaning formula offered by various manufacturers will cut through the dirt and grime without much effort. Almost all bike cleaners are now biodegradable and safe to use. They also do not cause any damage to paint, brake pads or carbon fibre. Just wet the bike, spray on the cleaner, wait a few minutes then wash off, preferably with a brush to get the best result.

Bike cleaner is available as a mix in a new bottle, or as a concentrate. Once you have the spray bottle, you only need the concentrate to mix with water and top your bottle back up. More companies are moving toward this more eco-friendly concentrate, some even have the bike cleaner in a tablet form to be mixed at home. Click to see our How To Clean Your Bike guide

Bike Lubricants

After cleaning your bike, you will want to lube your chain again, though it is always a good idea to make sure your chain is lubed after a long ride. Please see our guide here for more info. Keeping your bike chain lubed will not only prolong the life of your chain, but also the whole drivetrain.

Lubrication does not only include chain lube but also grease for assembly after a strip-down, along with specialist oils for suspension and bearings.

Cleaning Brushes

Once you have your bike cleaner and degreaser it is much easier to use some dedicated brushes. Using brushes will also give a better result to the cleaning by shifting the stubborn dirt and giving the bike a good scrub.

A good set-up is to have 3 brushes, one large brush for the main body of the bike, another large brush just for the wheels that are often covered in the worst of the muck, and another smaller brush that is only ever used for the drivetrain and gears. Keeping a separate brush for the gears gives less chance of contamination and spreading dirty oil and lube all over the rest of the bike.
