Short Sleeve Jerseys Guide
Short Sleeve Jersey Guide
Worn on their own, or under a jacket when it’s cooler, shorts sleeve jerseys are the go-to top for most serious cyclists. Made from technical fabrics that wick sweat away from the skin quickly these tops help to keep you comfortable on the bike. Cycling jerseys come with a cycling fit, whether that’s a race fit (tight fitting) for performance or a club fit (looser and more casual) for comfort.
Jersey Fit
Road Race Fit
LRace fit jerseys have a figure-hugging design. Smoothing the airflow around your body for enhanced aerodynamic performance, these slim fitting race jerseys feature a tighter cut with no excess material to flap around in the wind.
Offering a form fit, the fabric sits close to your skin. This draws moisture away from your body most effectively, so it quickly evaporates to keep you cool as you push your limits.

Club or MTB Fit
Jerseys that are aimed at club road riders, commuters or mountain bikers tend to feature a looser cut that is comfortable while still offering reasonable moisture wicking properties.
Looser fit jerseys sacrifice a bit of aero performance (excess fabric will flap in the wind), but they are more flattering on all but the leanest athletes. They also look just as good off the bike, as on it.

Fabrics and Construction
Articulated Construction
The best short sleeve jerseys will be constructed with articulated areas that are specific for cycling. Articulated jerseys are slightly shorter at the front to prevent fabric bunching up with a longer drop tail at the rear, so you don’t expose your lower back. This articulated cut can be found in all cycling jerseys but is most pronounced with road race jerseys. Classic T-shirts aren’t so comfortable on the bike.

Technical Fabrics
Cycling Jerseys are made from technical fabrics that are designed to enhance your performance on the bike. Stretch fabrics offer comfort and freedom of movement on the bike while also allowing for a form fitting cut. Higher-end jerseys may feature seamless construction for improved aerodynamics and comfort.
The fabrics are designed to wick moisture away form the skin to help keep you cool. Classic cotton T-shirts retain moisture, so you’ll feel cold on the descents while a jersey allows the moisture to evaporate quickly keeping you dry and reducing wind chill.

Jersey Disciplines
Cycling jerseys are designed with different features to suit the needs of riders in different areas of the sport. Look for a jersey with features that suit the type of riding that you want to do.
Road Cycling Jerseys
Road cycling jerseys are tight fitting and feature a partial or full zipper, for improved ventilation on the climbs. As well as being form fitting these jerseys have a deep drop tail articulated cut, so that the rear is much lower for a better fit when in a crouched riding position. You’ll also find a trio of rear pockets for gels and bars, with an extra zippered pocket for valuables.

Seamless or flatlock joins between the panels creates a smooth surface which improves aerodynamics as well as making the jersey more comfortable. Silicone grippers on the hem and sometimes on the arm will help keep the jersey in place.
What to look for in a road jersey:
- Full or half front zip for ventilation
- High wicking technical fabrics
- Mesh and/or windproof panels
- Tight road race fit with deep drop tail
- Rear storage pockets
Mountain Bike Jerseys
MTB jerseys will usually be constructed with a looser cut to road jerseys as aerodynamics and a skin-tight fit is not a consideration unless you’re XC racing. This looser cut is non-restrictive on technical terrain and looks great off the bike. These jerseys have improved abrasion resistance to withstand the abuse of off-roading. A quality MTB specific feature is silicone or tacky shoulder panels to stop your backpack from slipping as you ride.

Mesh panels on the sides, under the arm and down the back offer improved ventilation and are found instead of a front zip on many MTB jerseys. For more technical downhill mountain biking, a jersey with a loose fit will let you wear body armour underneath for added protection. Trail and enduro jerseys tend to be well vented while XC jerseys are similar to road jerseys with a close fit and pockets for nutrition.
What to look for in an MTB jersey:
- High wicking technical fabrics
- Mesh and/or laser cut ventilation panels
- Loose MTB fit with slight drop tail
- Zipped stash pocket
- Sunglasses/goggles wipe
Commuter Jerseys
If you spend most of your time on the bike commuting to work, then there are a few specific features to consider. Firstly, look for jerseys that come with hi-vis block colours to enhance your daytime visibility. Also look for reflective striping and elements to help you be seen at night.

A looser club fit is more flattering on a range of body types and is comfortable to wear at lower speeds. Look for zippered pockets for your phone, keys and other valuables.
What to look for in a commuter jersey:
- High-viz colours for increased daylight visibility
- Reflective elements for night-time visibility
- High wicking technical fabrics
- Zipped stash pocket
- Half zip for ventilation
Jersey Alternatives
Technical T-Shirts
If you are looking for a more casual look with some of the advantages of a jersey, then have a look at Technical T-Shirts. Combining quick drying technical fabrics with a classic T cut, Tech Tees are a great alternative to a jersey. Popular with mountain bikers and urban cyclists these riding shirts offer a more casual look to a jersey with fabrics that outperform cotton.
