Chains Guide

Chain Guide

A chain is one of the core components of any bike. It connects the movement of your legs to the rotation of the rear wheel. To prevent premature wear of the gearing cogs, you will want to fit a new chain periodically.

A chain does stretch over time and will need replacing, if all the adjustment on your gears seems correct but you cannot get smooth shifting, then often your chain needs replacing. There are a few different types available, so make sure you get the correct replacement to ensure compatibility.

What size?

Chains are available at different speeds. The speed of a chain corresponds to the number of gears your bike has on the rear wheel. For example, a bike that has 10 rear cogs will need a 10-speed chain. The amount of gears on the front, or chainset, does not determine the speed of the chain needed.

Things are a little simpler for bikes that use 6, 7 or 8 speeds, as one size of chain will fit all these speeds, but 9, 10, 11 and 12 speed require a specific chain as they use a different thickness of sprocket and are not interchangeable. It is best to stick with the same chain manufacturer as the gear manufacturer, for example, if your bike has Shimano gears, then use a Shimano chain.

A chain will be sold with a certain amount of links, one length does not fit all, luckily a new chain will usually be too long and needs to be shortened to suit. An easy way to measure what length your bike needs is to shorten the chain to the same number of links as the previous one. Please see our guide here for more info on shortening your new chain.

Single speed chains

Some bikes have no cluster of gears on the rear wheel but use only one cog. This can mean the bike is single speed, or it uses internal hub gearing. A single-speed chain is thicker than a chain designed for use with a derailleur. The internal width will be 1/8" and is a standard across bikes that use a single cog on the rear wheel.

Typically a single speed chain is strong, as it uses a wider internal spacing so can be made from thick plates, but a single speed chain will still stretch and will still need changing periodically. It will also need to be shortened to the length your bike requires.

BMX Chains

BMX chains are made to be tough, they are chunky and designed to be able to withstand the rigours of BMX riding. BMX chains use 1/2" spacing so are different to those used on regular bikes. They use 1/8" internal width, though some racers might use the slightly lighter and narrower 3/32” size and some heavy-hitting riders might use the 3/16” size. Still, most use the standard 1/8".

BMX chains are available in two types, traditional and half-link. A traditional link is made up of two half links, when shortening a traditional chain two half links will need to be removed, this can make quite a difference to the length when used on a bike as small as a BMX. Those that wish to have more control over the chain length will use a half-link chain. A half-link chain is only made up of half-links, so when shortening, a much more precise length can be achieved than when using a traditional chain.

How to fit and remove

When you get your new chain, you will need to remove the old one. To do this you will need a chain tool. A chain is made up of links connected by pins. The chain tool will push the pin from one side and out the other, disconnecting the chain from itself. Please see our full guide for handy videos and tips on replacing your chain.

How to lube

One of the most basic parts of bike maintenance is making sure that your chain is lubricated correctly. A chain that does not have lubrication applied with not shift correctly, and will wear all parts of the drivetrain prematurely. Save money by keeping your chain lubricated. Please see our full guide to get the most life from your chain and gearing.
