Cyclocross Bikes Guide

What is cyclocross?

Cyclocross is a multi-discipline cycling race on hills, flats and muddy terrain. There are sections where you'll need to get off your bike and scramble tricky terrain (with your bike on your shoulder).

Skillful bike handling is essential. Cyclocross runs from September to January, making it a great way to keep your fitness up during the off-season. Most cyclocross courses are between 1 – 2 miles mixing everything from tarmac to compact dirt, loose sand, hills and even steps. A versatile bike is key for performance.

How do cyclocross bikes differ from road bikes?

At a glance, cyclocross bikes look just like a road bike. Most cyclocross bikes combine the efficiency of road bikes with drop bars and lightweight frames matched to a carbon fork. Look a little closer and they do differ.

Key differences include:

- Wide 700 30-38c knobbly tyres for grip

- Wide fork and rear stay tyre clearance

- Powerful Disc brakes

- Longer wheel span for stability

- Shorter top tube for improved handling on variable terrain

- Higher bottom bracket for ground clearance

- Wide top tube to shoulder the bike easily

- Internal cable routing (or routing along top tube) to keep debris from damaging cables

These features combine to make a bike which is capable on a range of terrain and conditions.

What else is a cyclocross bike good for?

Commuting

The all-weather performance of these bikes, handling and low weight make them excellent commuter bikes. Disc brakes offer reliable performance whatever the conditions while a light frame helps you speed through the morning rush. Some cyclocross bikes also come with mudguard and rack mounts, further increasing their utility.

Fitness training

Push a cyclocross bike to the limit and you can go very fast. The lightweight road handling characteristics of these bikes are ideal for improving your fitness. Mud clearance, grippy tyres and powerful disc brakes mean you can train year round – even in the depths of winter.

Long distance riding

A slightly more relaxed geometry (riding position) compared to a road bike makes for more comfortable riding over long distances. If you want to go touring, a pliable steel (or ultra-luxury titanium) frame rather than a stiffer aluminium one is less fatiguing on long rides.

Off-road exploring

Leave the tarmac behind. Head into the wide with tyres you can run at much lower pressures (40psi or lower) for added grip. Mud clearance and disc brakes won’t hold you back in the dirt. A slightly more relaxed riding position is stable on variable terrain.
