    Onguard Bulldog D-lock

Purchased for when we take the bikes away from home, to use on the bike rack and in the towns and cities we visit. The secondary cable is a great bonus. Not used yet but feels like our bikes will be safe. Another great buy from Tredz.

    SAVED ME!

I purchased this lock 2 years ago and have only occasionally used it. I have always thought to my myself that it is a little too heavy and I get tired of carrying it. But today I experienced my first attempted theft whilst my bike was locked up. The attempt was laughable, they cut through the rubber and hardly cut into the steel. They tried in 3 different places. Any other lower quality lock would have been cut away with the equipment (saw) they were using. This has saved me a lot of money! Unfortunately I lost the front wheel of my bike (I only locked up the back) but that's £50 for a new wheel.. rather than another £1000 for the rest. Thank you!!

    Top quality lock

Ive had this lock since the end of last summer now. I leave it over night shackled to the cycle stands at work which are outside. It is too heavy to mount on a bike but to be fair I didn't buy it for that purpose. It is extremely robust and I have never had any problems with the lock although I have oiled it periodically. Excellent price too

Great lock, maybe a bit awkward

The lock feels solid and secure, comfortable leaving my bike in the middle of the city for hours at a time. The shackle itself is heavy and strong - big enough to pass through a thick bike rack, the back wheel and the frame. Nice touch with the silicon pads too. The cable is a bit awkward to coil up but adds to the feeling of security, being able to lock the front wheel up and do an extra loop round the bike rail. Simple enough to mount to the frame, but due to the size of the lock it means that it takes up most of the frame room meaning I'm only able to use one of my bottle mount positions (And it's an XL hybrid as well!). Also it rattles a bit going over potholes etc. Overall a really solid lock but it does have a few issues if portability is your #1 concern

Too Big and Heavy for me

Pros: Looks solid and secure, comes with frame mounting bracket (which was a pleasant surprise) Cons: Too big to mount inside the frame of my bike (GT Hybrid), too heavy to be a portable lock. Summary: Had to buy a lesser (Sold Secure Silver) lock that was much smaller and thus portable.

    Misleading

The lock is seems very strong and well build. Just had it for the first day. Downside is - too heavy, difficult to mount on the bike (mine is a GT hybrid), sadly the key registration and Anti-theft Guarantee is only for US customers only. Be careful as one of my reason was this.

    Fantastic lock.

This is the second lock of this make and model i have bought. This one is to secure my daughters new bike. The shackle is weighty and well built and the cable is sturdy and a good length. The lock is large and heavy but it can easily be fitted to the frame by using the mount. Comes with plenty of spare keys as well.

    Lock seized after 4 months

I bought this lock for my daughter to use at university. After 2 months, she couldn't turn the key in the lock. Lots of wd40 and oil later, managed to free it, but still rather stiff. After a further 2 months, the locking mechanism seized solid again. I contacted Tredz who asked me to send it back. They emailed me a Collect Plus label, so there was no cost to me. They inspected it, found it to be covered by warranty, and sent me a new one. I think I'll just use this inside the garage rather than outside in the elements. Not sure it's really up to much weathering. So a BIG thank you to the staff at Tredz. Superb customer service.

    Perfect item

This is HEAVY and tough but that's what I need for occasional use, leaving my bike at the station overnight for example. It means I can leave my bike with confidence that it will still be there the next day. Cable is handy to lock the front wheel and helmet. Shackle is big enough to go through the frame and back wheel AND the fixed rack. With a water bottle holder fitted, and having a ladies bike, this does not fit in its holder within the frame triangle. Instead I use a couple of bits of double sided velcro on the cross bar. This does the trick and is probably more reliable and versatile! Not really a fault with the lock though, hence five stars. Great price at Tredz too.

    D-Lock Guide

    Overview

For use in medium to high crime areas

A D-Lock (also known as a U-Lock) is the most practical bike lock you can get for peace of mind when you’re at the shops or in work all day.

D-Locks are ideal for bike security as they offer strong protection against a range of attacks. While some of these locks will be heavy, they are much more portable than a chain lock and far tougher than a cable lock. D Locks are very stiff meaning they’re easy to fit around your bike and a stationary object.

Most D-Locks come in two parts. You have the shackle made of steel or hardened steel with a diameter up to 18mm. The crossbar contains the locking mechanism and you slide the shackle into the bar and turn the key to fix it in place.

    Size

    D-Lock Size

A standard D-Lock will easily fit around your bike and normal bike racks. If you have a particularly wide framed bike you can get wider and longer shackles. Alternatively, there is also a range of mini D-Locks are that specifically for use just with a standard bike rack. You won’t be able to fit your bike around a lamppost with a mini.

For security, it is best to get a D-Lock which will fit your frame and stationary object without leaving too much internal space. A common way for thieves to defeat your D-Lock is by slipping another object like a crowbar inside the shackle and leveraging with enough force to break it open.

    Shackle Diameter

When choosing a D-Lock, the thicker the shackle diameter is, the more secure it is (especially against bolt cutters). However, the trade off is weight. Some very sturdy D-Locks can weigh over 2.5kg. One tip is to lock your bike high on the frame and off the ground to make it harder to use bolt cutters.

    Small diameter d-lock

    13mm & Under:

Under 13mm shackles can be cropped with most standard bolt cutters while some determination.

The quality of steel used in the shackle can increase the time this takes. Ideal for quick visits to the shops.

    Medium diameter d-lock

    13mm – 16mm:

At this diameter it becomes much harder to crop a D-Lock with a standard bolt cutter.

Good for locking to the bike rack outside the office.

    Large diameter d-lock

    16mm & Over:

With a shackle this burly only the largest bolt cutter jaws with sustained effort with crack through.

It’s unlikely a thief will have the time or tools to cut through. Great for locking your bike overnight.

    Locking Mechanism

    Deadbolt Locking

Most D-Locks will now use a deadbolt locking mechanism. A deadbolt cannot be moved to the open position except by rotating the key.

Look for a double deadbolt for enhanced security. This means there is a locking bolt on both sides of the crossbar. Locking the shackle on both entry points greatly improves twisting and cutting resistance. Even if a thief cuts through one end of the shackle, it’ll be much harder to twist the shackle out of position.

Some brands even offer quadruple deadbolt systems which lock the shackle to the crossbar in four places for maximum resistance.

    Construction

    Lock Material

Almost all D Lock shackles and locking mechanisms are built out of steel. However, some locks will be constructed from hardened steel. By tempering steel if becomes harder and less brittle making it much tougher to cut through.

Some locks use tempered steel for improved strength

    Sold Secure Rated

A great way to determine the quality of a bike lock is to see if it is Sold Secure Rated. This is a third party, UK independent rating system for bike locks.

Lock illustration showing the 3rd highest security rating of Bronze

    Sold Secure Bronze

    Coverage: Up to £500

Lock illustration showing the 2nd highest security rating of Silver

    Sold Secure Silver

    Coverage: Up to £1,000

Lock illustration showing the highest security rating of Gold

    Sold Secure Gold

    Coverage: Over £1,000

An approved lock is graded as Gold, Silver or Bronze. The rating is chosen by how long it takes to break the lock and the tools needed to break it. If you're planning on insuring your bike, many insurers will state you need a Sold Secure rated lock to make a successful claim.

These values vary between insurance providers so check the terms and conditions of your provider.

    Mounts

If you commute to work or use your bike daily, then having a mount to fix your lock to your bike frame is a great way to improve portability. Many brands will include easy to use frame mounts with their D-Locks but check the product description first.

    Frame Protection

D-Locks with vinyl covers, moulded end caps and rubber coatings all ensure that your bike frame is safe from scratches and damage to your paintwork.
