The Speed 5 is our tribute to the heyday of gentlemanly British cycle racing. This was a time when riders would come together in the noble pursuit of record-breaking times with only the satisfaction and thrill of success for reward. It embodies all that was great about this era, allowing you to follow in the footsteps of these men in your own exciting cycling endeavours.

The British racing green and gold colour scheme hints at this heritage, as does the frame-mounted number plate, and the traditionally slack frame geometry gives a dynamic riding position for maximum speed and performance. This sense of lineage is bolstered by hand-built quality - every Speed 5 is meticulously constructed by our dedicated craftsmen from legendary Reynolds 531 steel to produce a bicycle that will last a lifetime. The quality of construction is matched by the components we have chosen for this most special of cycles. The wide diameter Sturmey Archer hub brakes allow you to brake late for corners and have ultimate control over your speed, and the classic Brooks Swift leather saddle gradually forms to your shape for a high level of comfort and full range of movement.

The Speed 5 is not simply a revival of path racing tradition but an advancement of the sport, embodying the principles of the early pioneers with a refined design they would be truly proud of.

Historic racing frame with dynamic riding position: Authentic 1930s Path Racer frame with a long stable wheelbase and relaxed steering geometry, suited to speed cycling and gravel racing! With traditional frame-mounted race number plate. The frame is hand-built using 100 year old traditional methods - with original lightweight Reynolds 531 tubing hand-brazed into lugs - for the attention to detail that only a frame crafted by hand can possess. With traditional tubular crown forks and specially formed D section stays.

Semi-drop classic racing handlebars: Swept-back, high-strength stainless steel bar for confident handling whilst racing. Finished with traditional black leather bar tape.

Brass ‘ping’ Bell: A classic bell that is a refined addition to any bicycle. The bell has a domed shape body with a simple sprung finger mechanism that sounds out a clear ‘ting’ to let others know you're approaching.  The bell can be attached to either the handlebars or the stem.

Classic 5 speed hub Gears: With an easy-shift gear lever, they allow you to tackle hills and glide along gracefully on flatter terrain with ease. Fully enclosed gear system that requires minimal maintenance.

Powerful fully-enclosed 90mm hub brakes: Large diameter hub-brakes give reliable stopping power come rain or shine. Enclosed and sealed from all-weathers, these brakes are low maintenance and robust.

Iconic GB wingnuts: Adds to the Speed 5's authenticity and makes removal of the wheels that little bit easier.  Manufactured in England using the original tooling.

Classic tyres with puncture protection: a reliable tyre with a puncture protection insert, and a tread design that allows for secure contact with the road surface but with a low rolling resistance.

Traditional Brooks 'Swift' leather saddle: The handsome 'Swift' is a gentleman's racing saddle with delicately hand-skived lower sides for greater comfort whilst pedalling. The leather allows the saddle to breathe and form to your shape over time becoming uniquely comfortable. It's finished with large hand-beaten copper rivets, and comes with handy loops on the rear for luggage attachment.

Pedals with traditional toe-clips and leather straps: keep your feet in securely place, helping to transfer your pedal-power more efficiently.

Golden half-link chain: eye catching design and tough construction to transfer powerful cadence.

Build quality is so so for a £1000 bike, right pedal fell apart after 2 months, paint has a lot of imperfections in it, gears need the chain tensioned correctly to work or they will slip or grind, best to but bmx chain tugs. Riding it once set up properly is good fun, builds speed and feels solid, quite good for hills even though it's a very heavy bike, with its flaws it's quite a enjoyable ride even though it's around £350 overpriced

Hybrid Bikes Guide

Hybrid Bike Guide

A hybrid bike is a general-purpose bicycle, for cycling over a range of terrains with a mixture of road and mountain bike characteristics. Hybrid bikes will usually have flat handlebars similar to a mountain bike, but come with rapid rolling 700c road bike wheels. The flat handlebars offer a more upright riding position compared to that of a dropped handlebar road bike. This makes hybrids popular with commuters as they offer better visibility than a road bike when cycling in traffic, while the fast rolling 700c wheels mean they are quicker and more efficient than a mountain bike.

Hybrid bikes aren’t restricted to the road though. While the tyres are not as wide as mountain bikes, they are suitable for light off-roading on gravel tracks and canal towpaths. Hybrids also tend to have a wider gear range than road bikes making them easier to pedal up hill.

Are there different types of hybrid bikes?

Hybrid classic bikes

These look similar to traditional bicycles, and offer an upright, comfortable riding position. They are ideal for relaxed urban cycling as hybrid classic bikes are often supplied with chain and mudguards ready fitted.

Step through women’s bikes are very popular and may have both a basket and rack attached, making them perfect for trips to the shop or a picnic in the park.

Hybrid Bike Guide

Hybrid sports bikes

Hybrid sports bikes are more performance orientated and feature a riding position that has greater efficiency than a hybrid classic.

There are a variety of hybrid sports bikes available. Some will have wider tyres and a suspension fork up front to take the sting out of rough roads and tracks, while others will have narrower tyres and a rigid fork for smoother tarmac riding.

Hybrid Bike Guide

Should I buy a hybrid bike, a mountain bike or a road bike?

Off road only

For gravel tracks and forest roads then a hybrid sports bike with wider tyres and a suspension fork up front will be ideal. A mountain bike will be best if you intend to ride on technical off road trails and cross country tracks.

Hybrid Bike Guide

Mixture of on-road and off-road

A hybrid sports bike with wider tyres and a suspension fork up front will be ideal.

Hybrid Bike Guide

Urban roads

A hybrid sports bike with narrower tyres and a rigid fork is a good choice as it offers better visibility and easier handling than a road bike but will still be fast and efficient. Hybrid classic bikes are also ideal for more relaxed urban cycling.

Hybrid Bike Guide

Rural roads

A road bike will be faster and more efficient on quiet rural roads, especially on longer rides. Hybrid sports bikes are still suitable for riding on country roads if you value comfort over efficiency.

Hybrid Bike Guide

What to look for in a hybrid bike

Frame

Aluminium frames are lightweight and robust. Steel frames are heavier than aluminium but do offer a smoother ride. Carbon fibre is more expensive but provides the combination of a light frame and compliant ride.

Drivetrain

Most hybrids feature mountain bike style derailleur gears with a triple chainset upfront and a seven, eight, nine or 10 speed rear cassette.

This offers a wide range of gears with plenty of options at the lower end for easy climbing. Some higher end hybrid sports bikes will feature road bike style derailleur gears with a compact double chainset for faster riding.

While less common, hub gears offer the advantage of very low maintenance with the ability to change gear while stopped. Hybrid classic bikes tend to have a narrower range of gears suitable for lower intensity cycling on relatively flat terrain.

Saddles

With an upright riding position, more of your weight will go through the saddle. For this reason, hybrid classic bikes have wide saddles with plenty of padding. Too much padding can be a disadvantage with a more aggressive riding position, so hybrid sports bikes have narrower saddles with less support.

Forks

A suspension fork will help to smooth out the trails but does add weight. A rigid fork is ideal for efficient road riding.

Wheels and tyres

Nearly all hybrid bikes have 700c wheels but tyre width does vary. A narrower tyre (those with low numbers) will be faster while a wider tyre (those with higher numbers) will offer more comfort.

28c - 35c tyres- These tyres have a low rolling resistance and are ideal for road focused riding. The 28c tyres are typically found on high-end sports hybrids.

35c - 40c tyres - These are often combined with chunky tread and are found on hybrids with a suspension fork. They are suitable for riding on both road and trail surfaces.

40c – 50c tyres - Providing increased cushioning for a more comfortable ride these are found on hybrid classic bikes, where comfort is more important than speed.

Mudguards and racks

While all hybrid bikes are compatible with mudguards and racks, fitting them can sometimes be tricky. Fortunately many hybrids come with mudguards ready fitted and this is the best option if you know you require them before you buy.
