Bike Racks & Baskets Guide

Bike Racks & Baskets Guide

Bike racks, also known as pannier racks, are a great way to carry luggage when you ride. Pannier racks are an essential for touring and are very useful for urban cycling and commuting too.

Rear Bike Racks

For most bikes a rear pannier racks is the most convenient way to carry luggage when cycling. You can carry more luggage on a rear pannier rack compared to a front rack. This is because extra weight on the back of the bike doesn’t upset the handling as much as extra weight on the front.

Frame Mounted Racks

If the frame of your bike has rack and/or mudguard mounts, then you can easily fit a frame mounted pannier rack. These mounts are simple threaded holes or eyelets on the frame. You can find them above the rear axle and at the top of the seat stays. Rack mounts are found on touring bikes and hybrid bikes as well as most hardtail mountain bikes. Many gravel bikes and some road bikes also have them.

Do I need a disc specific rack?

Many racks are labelled as ‘disc mounted’ or ‘disc mounts’ but you can fit regular racks to most modern disk equipped bikes. ‘Disc mount’ racks are slightly wider than regular racks as the lower stays of the rack protrude from the frame to make room for anything that sticks out from it. Most modern disc brakes don’t stick protrude, so a regular rack will fit perfectly. You will only need a disc rack if your disc brake calliper and/or rotor sticks out from your frame. Disc racks can also be fitted to bikes with calliper brakes if you want a wider rack.

Seatpost Mounted Racks

If your bike doesn’t have rack and/or mudguard mounts, a frame mounted rack won’t work, but you can fit a seatpost mounted rack. As the name suggests these racks clip onto the seatpost of your bike. The fittings tend to be quite secure, and you can easily strap a bag on to them. Seatpost racks are easy to remove which makes them a good choice is you only want to carry luggage occasionally.

The rails on these racks are like frame mounted racks so you could attach pannier bags. However, as they will only be attached at the top the bags will wobble around, so this isn’t recommended.

Fitting Panniers and Lights

Pannier bags are designed to fit onto bike racks. A little adjustment is required when first fitting the pannier bags - every bike and rack combination is slightly different - but once this is done, they will fit securely. You can attach and remove Pannier bags in seconds.

Most rear bike racks have a plate on the back for fitting a rear light and/or reflector to help you be seen on the road at night. These mounts vary and may require an adaptor to fit specific rear lights.

Front Racks

Front bike racks attach to the fork of your bike. Touring bikes have threaded mounts or eyelets on the fork for easy fitting. However many front luggage racks have fittings for clamping the rack without mounts. These are suitable for all steel or alloy forks. Some will even work with suspension forks.

Front racks have attachments for side mounted pannier bags and/or a rack for strapping a bag or basket to. Front pannier bags are smaller than rear bags, but they attach in much the same way.

Racks and luggage mounts for folding bikes are available but these tend to work only with specific brands. For example, the Brompton Front Luggage Mounting Block will only work with Brompton bikes and Brompton luggage.

Most baskets are designed to fit either to the front or rear of your bike. Rear baskets are designed to fit onto a luggage rack, and some of these are also suitable for mounting to a front rack. Front baskets are designed to fit directly onto your bike with straps or a mount. Mounts are sometimes included with the basket, but others require separate mounts. These mounts are available separately in our basket spares section.

Check the product description of the basket you are interested in to see if it requires a mount, some just strap on to a rack or your handlebars. If your basket does require mounts, then check to see if they are provided or whether you need to buy them separately.
