The Scott Contrail 160 is a 16-inch children's bike aimed at young riders taking their first steps on a pedal bike. Scott recommends it for children around 95cm tall, with child-specific proportions and components designed to make learning easier for smaller riders.

The frame is made from 6061 aluminium and features a curved top tube. This provides extra clearance over the frame, making it easier for children to get on and off the bike and put their feet down when they need extra stability.

Scott pairs the aluminium frame with a rigid 6061 aluminium fork. With no suspension adding extra weight or complexity, the front end remains straightforward for young riders to handle while they're developing their steering and bike-control skills.

The single-speed drivetrain is equally simple. A Prowheel crankset with a 26-tooth chainring drives a 16-tooth rear freewheel through a KMC S1 chain. With no gears or shifters to think about, children can concentrate on pedalling, steering and braking.

Tektro J-310 V-brakes are fitted front and rear, with matching brake levers. Having independent hand-operated brakes helps young riders learn how to control their speed using conventional bike controls as their confidence develops.

The 16-inch wheels use alloy hubs with sealed bearings and are secured using Allen-key fittings rather than traditional quick-release levers. Kenda Booster 16x2.0in tyres provide a relatively wide footprint, giving young riders useful cushioning and grip for everyday riding.

A Syncros KIDS II saddle and matching seatpost are sized specifically for younger riders, complementing the child-focused proportions of the frame. An alloy handlebar with a 25.4mm clamp completes the straightforward cockpit.

The Contrail 160 is deliberately uncomplicated. Its single-speed drivetrain removes unnecessary controls, while the aluminium frame and fork, wide tyres and child-specific components provide a manageable platform for developing the basic skills needed to enjoy riding independently.
