Product Description

Call it mini if you may, but we prefer to think of it as an impero frame pump sized to fit your pocket. Using the same ergonomically perfect, full CNC, aluminium head from the impero, brass check valve shared with the impero and superpista, and steam formed 3mm thick leather gasket from milan as the impero, the pocket impero changes the game as the first full metal, fully functional pocket pump.

However, it was not enough to just shrink the impero and pocket impero adds some impressive technology of its own. The unique slide-lock silicone insulating sleeve both improves grip while protecting hands from the heat of pumping to high pressures (another issue for 'mini' pumps) and when finished, slides back into place to double as a handle lock when in your pocket. Mirror honed internals allow for the highest pumping efficiency and lowest stroke count of any pocket (mini) pump. The result: we have you back up and running in fewer strokes, with less headache than any other...just be sure that once you amaze your riding partners by fixing that 5th flat of the day in record time to remind them that it's not a 'mini-pump'.

Notes: Pocket impero is between a high pressure and high-volume pump. Mostly, it is an efficient pump which does not suffer from efficiency loss when hot, which is why most of them don't work so well. At 200 strokes the pocket impero reaches higher pressures than any other pocketable pump ever tested in the bikeradar test protocol, meaning that it is pushing more air with fewer losses than pumps of either high pressure, or high-volume designs.

Key Features:
  • Construction: Full metal with leather plunger and silicone insulating sleeve
  • Length: 8 in (20.3cm)
  • Weight: 5.3 oz (150gm)
  • Pressure at 200 strokes (bikeradar protocol):89psi

Hand Pump Guide

Hand Pump Guide

Hand pumps are the type you need for road or trail side use. Suitable for road, mountain and hybrid bikes they are small enough to fit in a trail pack and many can also be strapped to the frame of your bike.

What to look for

Valve Type

There are two main valve types used for cycling. Most hand pumps are suitable for both types of valve, but some will only fit one, so it’s best to know which type you need before you buy.

Schrader valves are the same type of valve that you find on cars. This valve type is usually found on kids bikes as well as more affordable mountain and hybrid bikes.

Presta valves are cycling specific valves. You’ll find these valves on road bikes as well as high-end mountain and hybrid bikes. Most tubeless valves are Presta valves.

types of bike valve

Most hand pumps require a small amount of disassembly to convert between Presta and Schrader valves. Dual-Head, SwitchHitter, and some other pumps work with both types of valve with no disassembly required.

High Pressure (HP) or High Volume (HV)

Some hand pumps are best for certain bike tyres and this depends on the tyre pressure and volume of the tyre. Mountain bikes have wide tyres that need lots of air, but pressures are low, so a High-Volume pump is best. Road bikes have narrow tyres that need less air, but the pressures are much higher, so a High-Pressure pump is best. Hybrid tyres fit somewhere between road and MTB so a general-purpose pump will be fine.

The maximum pressure of your tyres will be written on the side walls.

Pump Size

There is always a bit of a trade off with hand pump size. A smaller pump is easier to carry, as it takes up less room, but pumping up your tyres will be more difficult. Very small high-pressure pumps are okay for topping up pressures on a road bike, but you will need a larger general purpose or high-volume pump for wide mountain bike tyres.

Frame Mounts

If you want to attach your pump to the frame of your bike, then you’ll need one that comes with a Frame mount. Most small and medium size hand pumps have them. Frame mounts are compatible with bottle cages and both fit on the same mounting points, usually on the down tube and/or seat tube. Some larger hand pumps aren’t suitable for attaching to the frame so will need to be carried in a pack.

Other Features

Pumps with a flexible hose are easier to use as they allow for a little movement when using the pump, so tend to let less air escape. Some mini pumps have a hidden hose that can be extended for use. Hand pumps that have a foot plate and a T-handle are easiest to use. You can pump up tyres very quickly with these pumps, but they tend to be quite bulky.

Another useful feature is a pressure gauge to help you get the right tyre pressure. The gauges on these pumps aren’t the most accurate but they will give you a better idea of your pressures than pressing the tyre with your thumb.
