Stems Guide

What are stems?

The stem is the component that attaches your handlebar to your fork steerer. It has a clamp at either end, at 90 degrees to each other.

Who needs a stem?

Stems rarely need to be changed due to damage, but you might decide on an upgrade to save weight or to change your reach on your bike.

What are the choices?

Although your choice will partly be based on getting the right clamp size for your handlebars, you will also need to decide what length stem you want. Longer stems will increase your reach, while a shorter stem will decrease it and can sharpen up your bike’s handling.

What should I buy with them?

Many people will choose to upgrade their handlebar along with their stem, for compatibility or to get a pleasing matching set.

Anything else?

It’s crucial that you check the clamps at both ends of your stem are compatible – you need one for the right size headset and the right handlebar width.
