Rollers? Yes or No?

I wasn't too sure about rollers, but after trying a turbo trainer and rollers my mind is made up. Rollers, far more difficult to use straight away but also far more immersive. To be honest, nothing beats the open road but when the weather is just too bad the option to train inside is preferable. Turbo trainer, I found monotonous, boring, not interactive. Not that rollers are exciting, but you have to pay attention. It does force you to ride and concentrate. If you just want to turn the legs over, turbo! If you want to train rollers. These have good resistance and are relatively quiet. Quiet but by no means silent. In short, the rollers work well.

Rollers Guide

What are rollers?

Rollers are a simple way to train at home, meaning that despite the weather, you can still put the hours in. Consisting of spinning cylinders in a frame, you balance your bike wheels between the tubes and off you go. It takes a little practice to get used to them, but they make a great alternative to more expensive turbo trainers.

Who needs rollers?

If you’re undertaking some heavy duty training, then rollers are ideal as you can use them all year round. They are easy to assemble, use and store, The benefit of rollers is that you don’t need to change tyres as is the case with turbo trainers, and you can use any bike on them.

What are the choices?

There are a variety of rollers out there to suit all budgets and confidence levels. The tubes on parabolic rollers have flanged edges which prevent your wheels from wandering over the edges. There are also digital models and those which offer resistance settings.

What should I buy with it?

A mat is a great accompaniment to your rollers, preventing any damage to the surface underneath and also catching any falling sweat or tears.

Anything else?

Rollers may seem like a challenge, but the benefits alongside extra training are numerous. They improve key riding skills such as balance and core stability, along with requiring a higher level of concentration than a turbo trainer
