Does what it says - no more, no less

Comfortable, lightweight and keeps the moisture out on drizzly days. They are only rated 5K/5K so they won't keep you bone dry in heavy rain; they aren't designed to. But as a pair of trousers to commute in, for most of the year, they're great.

Looks quality but fails at keeping water out

Stitching is of good quality, and the trousers are quite warm so good for winter riding. However, the fabric completely fails to keep you dry in wet weather. Drizzle and light rain are fine for a short while, but anything more will see your underwear completely sodden. Another downside is the terrible fit: the crotch is way too low, meaning the hems rides up quite high when sat on a saddle, leaving ankles well exposed -- do not use without high overshoes.

Good To Go

Very satisfied so far, they may not be for the fashionistas among us but they fit and function well. As they are for use when it rains at a good price dont worry no one is looking at you they are avoiding the rain too sweety. Make sure your body and bag are reflective.

lovely

Beautifully comfortable, totally waterproof, they're slimfit though so i've worn them as trousers rather than over trousers. Other reviews suggest they may not be longlasting but so far I'm totally impressed.

Wet

Thought these would last longer with them being more expensive and had reasonabley good reviews. I was wrong. Had them around two weeks and I’ve encountered a heavy down poor and I have a wet ars. Not a pleasant way to start work.

Great fit and feel but dont last

These pants are very comfortable, so much i bought 2 pairs. These would be fine for commuting, but i used them for mountain biking and the seam split on the rear on both pairs in under 8 wears each! Tenn as a company have now closed down so any warranty wasn't honoured. If you are using where there is no abrasive mud and grit then they will be fine, for proper winter mtb, dont bother!

Any good for bootcamp

Are these stretchy. I’m trying to fin a pair suitable for outdoor boot camp. We have to sit or lie on the floor and I’m fed up of getting a wet bum.

Great but I style is odd!

These trousers are great but I regret opting for the reflective option! The style of the reflective version looks absolutely terrible! I would ignore any reviews where people which have stated that this reflective. It is, but if you commute to work don't buy them as your work colleagues will take the p***s! (You'll look like some 80's throw back before shell suits died its death!) The trousers are good performers and very waterproof and breathable, but buy the black version and get a spare set of lights!

Ideal winter commuting trousers

At the price of £29.99 these trousers are excellent value and as well made as some of the big brand names. The mesh lining keeps you warm and water just rolls off in beads (I haven't had a real downpour test yet). I'm 34" waist and 31" leg and L size is comfortable. Elasticated waist is good but I think the belt loop might come in useful. Like someone mentioned, the ankle velcro fastening could do with tighter setting as it occasionally catches the chain wheel. Apart from that, an excellent purchase for the winter commute.

Great cycling trousers

I did already buy 4 of them. I am cycling to work daily and I was looking for trousers which looks normal, are not too wide at the bottom and are waterproof. And for a good price. They are so great that I am wearing them in work too, cause I am a lorry driver and they are nice, warm and protective in all weather conditions...love them

Waterproof Trousers Guide

Waterproof trousers

If you want to keep riding through the worst of the weather, waterproof trousers are essential. They will make the commute much more comfortable, so you can arrive at work dry and warm. Touring riders and bikepackers will need the best so they can keep riding no matter what, and mountain bikers will be able to ride longer and in more remote locations when they are dry and comfortable.

Waterproof Ratings

Shown using a hydrostatic head rating, the waterproof rating of trousers gives an impression of what kind of weather they can withstand. The hydrostatic load is measured in mm and refers to the test where a vertical column of water is placed on the fabric. For example, a fabric with a hydrostatic head of 10,000mm will be able to withstand the pressure of this water without leaking. The higher the number, the more waterproof the fabric.

Water beading up on waterproof fabric

According to the British standards Institution, any fabric over 1500mm can be classed as waterproof. For cycling in light rain for a short commute for example, a minimum recommendation would be 10,000mm with a DWR coating.

For those who want the best protection 20,000mm + is highly recommended.

Fabric

Most waterproof clothing will be made up of layers of fabric. Usually an outer protective later with a laminated inner membrane that lets water vapour escape (breathability).

A typical 2 layer fabric construction

2 Layer

A face fabric bonded to a breathable/waterproof laminate with a liner. These are very flexible and comfortable, though they are a compromise on breathability, protection and durability.

Hump 2 layer over trousers
A typical 2.5 layer fabric construction

2.5 Layer

A step up where the inner liner is partially bonded to the membrane. The lightest option but not the most breathable or durable.

Altura Nightvision trousers
A typical 3 layer fabric construction

3 Layer

The most durable of the 3 options, and therefore often the most expensive, but with the best protection from the elements. 3 layer waterproof clothing will last longer.

Durable Water Resistance (DWR)

The majority of waterproof clothing is treated with a DWR coating. This is the first line of defence, causing water droplets to bead and run off the fabric. The DWR coating will wear away over time so you will need a Waterproofer such as Nikwax to reinstall performance.

Please see our Technical fabric Guide for more information.

Breathability Ratings

To avoid that “boil in the bag” feeling it is essential that the waterproof fabric can breathe. Waterproof fabric for cycling is a balancing act between breathability and waterproofness. If a fabric cannot breathe then the rider will be wet on the inside from perspiration. Breathability is measured in the grams of water that can pass through a square meter of fabric in 24 hours.

For example, a trouser or jacket with a 10,000g breathability and 10,000mm waterproof rating would be a minimum recommendation for cyclists.

Fit

Waterproof trousers will come in different fits for different applications. Mountain bikers will wear over the skin but will need pre-shaped knees to allow for knee pads. Most waterproof trousers will taper at the ankles to avoid them getting in the way.

Some will be overtrousers, with a baggy fit designed to be worn over normal clothes, these are great for commuting with less changing needed at work, though they can get quite warm over normal trousers.

Taped seams

The seams where each panel of fabric joins is one place where water can get in. to further aid waterproofing the best quality garments will have taped seams to help prevent water ingress.

Features

Elasticated waist is a common feature on waterproof trousers, though you might see Velcro tabs to control the waist, a ratchet style fastener, or belt loops.

Some waterproof trousers will have ankle adjustment including zips and/or Velcro. These come in especially useful when you can remove the trousers without removing your shoes. This adjustment can be used to tighten the trouser to stop drafts or loosen, giving some ventilation during the ride.

Reflective Detailing Options

Most trousers will include some element of reflective properties. Some will have dedicated reflective panels or simply the manufacturers logo’s will be reflective.

Altura's Night Vision trousers have various reflective details around the trousers to aid visibility.
