Shimano 105 Di2 Groupset Review
Semi-Wireless
This new 105 Di2 groupset is now semi-wireless and features a wireless cockpit that pairs the stored internal battery with both the front and rear derailleurs. This has been achieved without sacrificing the fast and reliable shifting riders are used to with 105.
12 Speed
105 is now 12 speed. With this jump up, riders now have the large range of high and low gearing they need with more precise spacing, allowing for a more comfortable cadence and unmatched efficiency.
Disc Brake Only
This groupset is unlike any other from Shimano, as 105 Di2 is now only available with disc brakes. This is a bald move, however these 105 disc brakes feature a revamped braking system for improved braking control and are easier to maintain. A new upgrade to the 105 callipers is the new bleed nipple on the side of the calliper allowing for easier bleeding of the brakes.
Gearing
Standard with this groupset, is a 11-34t 12-speed cassette. However, an additional non-series 11-36t cassette will be released alongside. This is a big change for a road bike and one which will be more accessible to more cyclists. The groupset is also supplied with a compact 50-34t chainset, but the front derailleur has a range for up to 52t chainrings.
Shifters
The new 105 shifters are identical to the Ultegra and Dura-Ace shifters, including their taller hood position offering extra comfort. However, there are minor differences including no auxiliary hood button on the top or an option to fit sprint shifters, like with Ultegra and Dura-Ace.
Software
Just like Dura-Ace and Ultegra groupsets, the 105 Di2 system is highly customizable through Shimano’s user friendly App – E-Tube Project. With E-tube project you can set up your drive drivetrain the way you like, adjust shift speed and utilize synchronized and semi-synchro shifting functionality. You can also pair third-party cycling computers such as Garmin and Wahoo to monitor your battery status and gear selection.
Weight
The total weight of this groupset comes to 2,996g which is 276g heavier than the Ultegra Di2 (depending on spec). Although slightly heavier, 105 Di2 is much friendlier in price and makes this much more accessible for those wanting to build a new bike or upgrade their groupset.
