Overview

In this Specialized Stumpjumper EVO review we look at the rowdy sibling of the Stumpy family. While the suspension travel numbers, are exactly the same as the regular Stumpjumper the geometry and components of these EVO bikes is skewed towards the extreme. This is a bike that is made for challenging descents and big lines, but it can still climb efficiently and won’t leave you feeling over-biked on mellower trail sections.

There are two models in the range each with two wheel-size options; a 27.5” wheeled bike and a 29er. Both the carbon and alloy models are seriously long and slack. This is reflected in the sizing which makes the bikes long without being tall. There are just two size options; the S2 is long while the S3 is longer.

Body like a Demo 8, bangin' like an 808

Long, low and slack are the three most popular buzzwords in mountain biking at the moment. The Stumpjumper EVO is one of the few bikes that really takes this concept seriously. At 63.5° the head angle is as slack as the 2019 Demo 8 downhill bike, which combined with the low BB height and long reach makes the EVO very confident on steep trails. This is where the bike comes into its own. While the EVO won’t be the quickest bike up the hill, the steep seatube angle and long front end give the bike a steady competent feel on the climbs.

The Stumpy EVO shares the same basic layout as the regular Stumpjumpers, with the sidearm design that keeps the bike nice and stiff even when the suspension is fully compressed. The ‘flip chip’ on the shock allows you to adjust the geometry by lowering the bottom bracket by 4 mm and slackening the suspension by half a degree. The Stumpy EVO has a specific frame for either 29” or 27.5” wheels. There are two frame options; the Comp bikes are made from Specialized’s M5 aluminium alloy while the Pro models have a full FACT 11m carbon fibre frame. These are Specialized’s highest grades of alloy and carbon fibre.

Cable routing is nice and neat and there is room for a full-sized bottle in the frame even with the piggyback shock fitted. The understated brushed aluminium and satin carbon finishes look great and help the EVO to stand out from the Stumpy crowd.

The extra reach (490mm on a 27.5" S3 frame) on the EVO gives you plenty of room to move about and weight the front wheel without fear of going over the bars.

In keeping with its rowdy ambitions, the Stumpjumper EVOs are fitted with harder hitting suspension shocks than their siblings. The Fox 36 is about as stiff as a single crown fork gets which makes it perfect for the EVO. While the Float Rhythm fork fitted to the comp is a couple of steps down from the top model it features a FIT4 damper. This makes the fork supremely capable when the going gets tough. The Pro gets a Performance Elite 36 fork with the excellent Grip2 damper. The fork rake is different on each bike (27.5 is 37mm, 29er is 44mm) for optimal handling with each wheel size.

With its piggyback reservoir the Fox Float DPX2 shock on the Comp will take hit after hit without breaking a sweat. The Pro bikes get a Coil sprung DHX2 shock for similar performance with an improved feel.

The 27.5 Stumpy has 150mm of rear wheel travel while the 29er has 140mm. Both bikes have a 150mm travel fork. Like the other Stumpies the EVO benefits from revised, more progressive, suspension kinematics that offer more mid stroke support. This means that the suspension gives a nice supple feel without blowing through all the travel as soon as the going gets rough.

Maximum stopping power

An Evo will not climb as capably as a regular Stumpjumper, but unless you’re racing the compromises are minimal and the rewards are great once you point it downhill.

Like the suspension, the components on the Stumpy EVO are all good for hard riding without being flashy. The four piston SRAM Code brakes are combined with 200mm rotors front and rear on all bikes to give you DH bike levels of stopping power. Perfect for riding the longest and steepest descents. The SRAM Eagle 12 speed drivetrains give you plenty of gear options to get you back to the top of the hill.

The Specialized branded handlebars are a good shape. At 800mm they are wide enough for everyone and easy to cut down to your preferred width. Combined with a 45mm stem this set up is perfect for riding gnarly terrain. The lock-on grips have a nice feel too. The EVO Pro has a Specialized Command post 160mm dropper while the Comp gets an X-Fusion Manic dropper that offers a 150mm drop and is infinitely adjustable.

Wheels

27.5” or 29”, carbon or alloy

As with the regular Stumpies you can choose between 27.5” and 29” wheels with the Stumpjumper EVO. Both versions feature Roval Traverse wheels. These hoops have hookless rims with a 30mm internal width that offers great support for the tyres when running low tyre pressures. The rims come ready taped and are supplied with valves making it very easy to set them up for tubeless running. All you need to do is fit the valves, add some tubeless sealant, pump up the tyres and you’re good to go.

The Pro models get carbon rims while the Comps have alloy rims. You get 2.6” Specialized Butcher tubeless tyres on both wheel sizes. These give you plenty of grip on challenging terrain and are ideal all-rounders.

After one ride on the Stumpy Evo 29er, I can confidently say I’ve never ridden a trail bike that gobbles up rough descents like this one!

Steep, rough trails

The Stumpjumper has always been the all-rounder in Specialized’s MTB line up. This EVO version takes the bike to another level. Built for those who want boundary-pushing geometry that can take on seriously rowdy terrain. If you love riding steep loamy trails and long rough descents the EVO could be the perfect bike for you.

If you’re looking for more rounded trail bike performance the regular Stumpjumper will be a better choice. However, if you live for the steeps, then the longer reach, slacker head angle and lower bottom bracket height of the EVO will be ideal.
