Cycling Shorts Guide
Cycling Shorts Guide
Whether you are road biking, mountain biking or just cycling, shorts are the best things to ride in most of the time. In this guide we’ll look at the different types of shorts for the different cycling disciplines, but first let’s consider why cycling shorts are better than casual shorts to ride in.
Why cycling shorts are best for riding in
While you may be tempted to ride in casual shorts, running shorts or gym shorts there are some very good reasons why cycling shorts are a better choice.
While road cycling and mountain biking have different requirements there are some common features to all cycling shorts:

- Cut is optimised for comfort when cycling
- Padded inserts protect your sensitive areas
- Breathable fabrics and/or vents to keep you cool
- Water resistant fabrics to keep you dry
- Flat seams offer a smooth surface next to your skin

Types of Cycling Shorts
Lycra Shorts
Lycra shorts are the traditional type of road cycling shorts. Made from technical stretch fabrics with a skin-tight form fitting design these shorts allow you to pedal freely without bunching up and chaffing your skin. Silicone grip strips ensure that these shorts stay in place no matter how hard you pedal. Also popular with cross-country MTB racers, lycra shorts have a chamois pad which provides a little padding between you and your saddle and adds a lot of comfort.

Bib Shorts
Bib shorts are just like lycra shorts except that they have shoulder straps (bibs) instead of an elasticated waist band to keep them up. Bib shorts are very comfortable to wear on long rides as there is no waistband to dig in when you’re in a tucked cycling position. This is why all the pros choose bib shorts over regular lycra shorts.

Baggy Shorts
Most mountain bikers prefer to ride in baggy shorts as they are more durable than lycra shorts, so aren’t completely ruined if you fall off the bike. While they may look like casual shorts, they feel very different on the bike. This is because they are cut to fit the body while cycling often with stretch panels to aid freedom of movement while you pedal and move about on the bike. Some baggy shorts are supplied with padded undershorts for comfort in the saddle.

Under Shorts
Under shorts include a chamois pad and are designed to be worn under baggy shorts to give you the same levels of comfort as lycra shorts. Stretch fabrics, a form fitting cut, and silicone grip strips ensure that these shorts don’t bunch up while you ride. The main difference between under shorts and lycra shorts is that the fabric is thinner and more breathable, so they’re more comfortable to wear under baggies.

Casual Shorts
Our range of casual shorts from top bike brands like Fox are great for everyday wear at the beach or around town as well as chilling out after that big ride. Of course, cycling brands can’t resist making their shorts bike friendly, so you’ll feel comfortable on that quick ride to the shops to stock up on supplies for the barbeque.

Features to Look Out For
Chamois Pad
It’s the chamois pad in shorts that makes you feel more comfortable in the saddle when you ride. This pad sits next to your skin and offers more comfort for your lower vitals. A chamois is much more effective than a thick padded saddle when it comes to sitting and pedalling comfort. Premium shorts will feature a multi density pad that’s been ergonomically designed to offer the most comfort in the saddle.

Breathable Fabrics and/or Vents
For warm summer rides breathability and/or venting is an important consideration. Lycra shorts are available in different weights to suit the seasons and premium shorts will often feature thinner breathable panels in strategic places. Baggy shorts often feature zip vents which you can open up to improve airflow on the climbs.

Water Resistance
Some shorts have water repellent DWR coatings to help keep you dry in a shower. Waterproof rear panels are especially welcome on wet rides, especially when mountain biking as wide knobbly tyres can throw up a lot of spray to soak your behind.

Reflectivity
If you’re planning on cycling to work or fitness training in the evening, then added reflective elements are a bonus. More brands are offering shorts with reflective panels for low light conditions. Look for logos, stripes and graphics positioned on the thighs for maximum visibility.
