Waterproof Trousers Guide
Waterproof trousers
If you want to keep riding through the worst of the weather, waterproof trousers are essential. They will make the commute much more comfortable, so you can arrive at work dry and warm. Touring riders and bikepackers will need the best so they can keep riding no matter what, and mountain bikers will be able to ride longer and in more remote locations when they are dry and comfortable.
Waterproof Ratings
Shown using a hydrostatic head rating, the waterproof rating of trousers gives an impression of what kind of weather they can withstand. The hydrostatic load is measured in mm and refers to the test where a vertical column of water is placed on the fabric. For example, a fabric with a hydrostatic head of 10,000mm will be able to withstand the pressure of this water without leaking. The higher the number, the more waterproof the fabric.

According to the British standards Institution, any fabric over 1500mm can be classed as waterproof. For cycling in light rain for a short commute for example, a minimum recommendation would be 10,000mm with a DWR coating.
For those who want the best protection 20,000mm + is highly recommended.
Fabric
Most waterproof clothing will be made up of layers of fabric. Usually an outer protective later with a laminated inner membrane that lets water vapour escape (breathability).

2 Layer
A face fabric bonded to a breathable/waterproof laminate with a liner. These are very flexible and comfortable, though they are a compromise on breathability, protection and durability.

2.5 Layer
A step up where the inner liner is partially bonded to the membrane. The lightest option but not the most breathable or durable.

3 Layer
The most durable of the 3 options, and therefore often the most expensive, but with the best protection from the elements. 3 layer waterproof clothing will last longer.

Durable Water Resistance (DWR)
The majority of waterproof clothing is treated with a DWR coating. This is the first line of defence, causing water droplets to bead and run off the fabric. The DWR coating will wear away over time so you will need a Waterproofer such as Nikwax to reinstall performance.
Please see our Technical fabric Guide for more information.
Breathability Ratings
To avoid that “boil in the bag” feeling it is essential that the waterproof fabric can breathe. Waterproof fabric for cycling is a balancing act between breathability and waterproofness. If a fabric cannot breathe then the rider will be wet on the inside from perspiration. Breathability is measured in the grams of water that can pass through a square meter of fabric in 24 hours.
For example, a trouser or jacket with a 10,000g breathability and 10,000mm waterproof rating would be a minimum recommendation for cyclists.

Fit
Waterproof trousers will come in different fits for different applications. Mountain bikers will wear over the skin but will need pre-shaped knees to allow for knee pads. Most waterproof trousers will taper at the ankles to avoid them getting in the way.
Some will be overtrousers, with a baggy fit designed to be worn over normal clothes, these are great for commuting with less changing needed at work, though they can get quite warm over normal trousers.

Taped seams
The seams where each panel of fabric joins is one place where water can get in. to further aid waterproofing the best quality garments will have taped seams to help prevent water ingress.
Features
Elasticated waist is a common feature on waterproof trousers, though you might see Velcro tabs to control the waist, a ratchet style fastener, or belt loops.
Some waterproof trousers will have ankle adjustment including zips and/or Velcro. These come in especially useful when you can remove the trousers without removing your shoes. This adjustment can be used to tighten the trouser to stop drafts or loosen, giving some ventilation during the ride.

Reflective Detailing Options
Most trousers will include some element of reflective properties. Some will have dedicated reflective panels or simply the manufacturers logo’s will be reflective.
