Under Shorts Guide
Designed to be worn under baggy shorts or cycling trousers under shorts are a great way to gain some comfort on the bike without having to go full lycra. As well as having chamois pad to improve your comfort in the saddle some under shorts have hip and thigh pads to protect you in a crash.
Fit
Like lycra shorts, under shorts have a close figure-hugging fit. They are made from lightweight breathable fabric to help to keep you cool as you ride. The material is also very stretchy, so they don’t restrict your movement on the bike. Look for silicone leg grippers to stop the shorts riding up your leg as you pedal. Under shorts are available in men’s women’s and children’s specific fits. Some shorts have subtle fittings that clip to compatible bike shorts, but all can be worn under any cycling shorts or trousers.
Chamois Pad
It’s the chamois pad in under shorts that make you feel more comfortable in the saddle as you ride. This pad sits next to your skin and offers more comfort for your lower vitals. A chamois is much more effective than a thick padded saddle when it comes to sitting and pedalling comfort. Premium under shorts will feature a multi density pad that’s been ergonomically designed to offer the most comfort in the saddle.
Protection
Designed for hard charging mountain bikers under shorts with added protective panels are a great addition to your body protection wardrobe. The protective panels sit over your hip and tail bones as well as your upper thighs to cushion these areas from impact in a crash. Some protective shorts are designed for downhill riding so may not include a chamois pad.
