Product Description

The Merida eOne-Sixty 8000 is a an innovative electric mountain bike that pushes the boundaries of e bike technology. The 'original' eONE-SIXTY is the most decorated, tested and awarded bike in MERIDA's history and has shaped what MERIDA is known for today: innovation, quality and outstanding performance.

  • Carbon frame with alloy swing arm and fully integrated battery pack
  • Marzocchi Z1 e bike specific fork offers 160mm of travel
  • RockShox Super Deluxe shock controls the 160mm of rear wheel travel
  • Shimano XT 12 speed drivetrain with 10-51t cassette
  • 29" front wheel with 27.5" rear wheel for the best of both worlds

Drive information:
  • Motor: Shimano Steps E8000 70Nm
  • Battery: Shimano 504Wh internal battery pack
  • User Interface / Display: Shimano Steps E8000 display & remote switch
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth smart phone and PC app

However, after three years at the top of the e-enduro ranking, it was time to distil the essence of the 'old' eONE-SIXTY, incorporate the latest trends and standards, and create a new benchmark.
The new Merida eONE-SIXTY again embodies e-enduro bikes. On downhills, it still feel s like a normal bike, agile due to perfectly tuned MTB geometry, but more planted because of the higher weight. It's a fun bike with a clear focus on trail riding.

The last few years have shown the eONE-SIXTY is often used as a 'SUV' bike. Because of the advantages of more travel, bigger tyres and comfortable geometry, it offers a fun, comfortable and capable alternative to a ‘normal’ mountain bike.

The eONE-SIXTY is a high-end state of the art e-bike. Material, design and integration are cutting edge. Nothing less could be expected after the successful first generation eONE-SIXTY which influenced a whole generation of e-bikes.

Trail riding! Geometry, travel and specification make this bike perfect for demanding trail riding. It doesn’t matter if its a playful easy trail or a hardcore enduro track. The new eONE-SIXTY loves it all.
But besides its enduro and trail riding abilities, the eONE-SIXTY is also a hugely capable and enjoyable ‘SUV’ bike. Because of the travel, the comfortable and upright riding position the eONE-SIXTY gives a lot of confidence and offers a real alternative to a ‘normal’ mountain bike.
If a 2nd battery or charging device is carried, it can also be used for all day riding or multi-day excursions.

When chosing the frame materials, stiffness was a major focus, in particular for the front triangle, but the big hole in the down tube presents a structural disadvantage. Using carbon for the front triangle, we have maintained the stiffness whilst reducing weight despite the design challenges the battery opening presents.

Also, carbon gives real design freedom when it comes to creating a unique appearance.
The aluminium rear triangle has proven durability and function, it's the same as the first generation eONE-SIXTY and is one of the strongest rear ends MERIDA has ever made.
We also have the advantage of spares being interchangeable.

The bike is optimised for a 29" front wheel, offering better ‘roll over' performance.
The head angle got slacker and the bottom bracket height got lower for better control at high speed.
The original eONE-SIXTY was optimised for 175mm crank. The new bike is designed for 165mm cranks so it can lower the BB to optimise climbing performance the seat angle got steeper.

Highlights:

Thermo Gate

Forged aluminium part integrated into the headtube. Works like a chimney so hot air can rise up and escape. When riding, heat build up from the battery is not usually an issue, but if the bike was laid in the sun for a long time heat could build up.

Wheel Size

Mixed wheel sizes to get the best of both worlds. 29" front wheel for better ‘roll over
performance’ with a 2.5" wide tyre for precise steering. 27.5" rear wheel with 2.6" tyres give
maximum traction and comfort. The smaller rear wheel size allows shorter chainstays for a more agile and playful character.

Internal Block

To prevent the fork crown hitting the down tube we use an ‘Internal Block’ integrated into the frame. A clamp is installed on the fork steerer. If the steering angle is too extreme the clamp hits the rubber protection block inside the frame. Just in case the clamp does rotate on the steere, there's additional rubber protection under the head tube.

Easy Charging

The internal battery can be accessed easily, pulling a rubber strap, sliding forward the panel and opening, the battery can then be removed by a small turn of an Allen Key (provided). But the battery doesn't need to be removed as a satellite charging port can be used.

Rattle Free

Two part battery cover, the outer layer reduces noise through its soft material and tight fit, while the hard plastic inner layer gives it the structural shape. Key components i.e. the rubber strap and o-rings, can be replaced. Almost all connection points between battery and frame have a rubber layer between them too.

Bottle Bosses and Cable Routing

A new clamp system makes it easy to organise and route cables inside the downtube whilst also providing bottle bosses on the outside. Bottle cages can be put in two positions. The upper one must be used when a piggyback shock is mounted. For Gen II a bottle can be mounted to all frame sizes.

Battery Wake Up

If the bike has not been used for more than 6 months, or when the battery of the on/off switch is empty (this battery is normally charged by the main battery) it's necessary to wake the battery up again, simply push a 4mm Allen key (on the Merida Expert TR axle) through the hole on the downtube and press the hidden button underneath

The heart of the eOne-Sixty 8000 is the Shimano Steps E8000 70NM motor and new integrated Shimano Steps E8035 504W battery. Modes are controlled by a Shimano Steps E8000 shift lever and key information is displayed on a colour Shimano Steps E8000 display.

Electric MTB Guide

Electric Mountain Bike Guide

Is an Electric Mountain Bike Right for Me?

If you’re new to the cycling world, we highly recommend taking a look at our bike buying guide overview or our electric bike buying guide to help you decide what type of e bike is right for you.

When you’re choosing an electric mountain bike, there are a few things to look out for, which can help you to work out the quality and performance to expect from a particular model.

Usage & Suspension travel

Just like a regular full suspension or hardtail mountain bike, the amount of available suspension travel on an eMTB varies with the intended use. Depending on the type of mountain bike riding you’ll be doing, you’ll want a bike with longer or shorter suspension travel as well as components suited to more or less technical terrain.

Frame Material

Most electric mountain bike frames are made from aluminium alloy, although some are made from carbon fibre composite.

Aluminium

Aluminium alloy is lightweight, stiff, strong. Manufacturers often develop their own aluminium alloys, such as ALUXX by Giant. Aluminium is found on a wide range of e bikes, from entry-level and enthusiast bikes, right the way up to top-spec eMTBs.

Carbon Fibre

Carbon fibre is lighter, stiffer, stronger, and more expensive than aluminium. The main benefit for electric mountain bikes is that carbon frames are stiffer for improved handling.

Drive Tech

Designed to enable you to have more fun on the trails, all of our electric mountain bikes feature powerful crank drive motors with long lasting lithium-ion battery packs and easily accessible control units.

Motor

Crank drive motors boost your natural pedalling power. The cranks are connected to the motor and the motor is connected to the chainring which then powers the bike forward. The bike senses the pressure that you put though the pedals and then adds an appropriate level of power to make pedalling easier. This additional power is delivered seamlessly, and you will feel like your legs have just become much more powerful. Motors all have a nominal 250w output and are usually provided by big component manufacturers like Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha and Brose.

Battery

Easily charged either on or off the bike the lithium-ion battery pack will offer you long lasting assistance. Where and how you ride will make a big difference to the range that you can expect to achieve from a single charge, but most e bikers find the capacity of these batteries to be more than sufficient. Some brands offer innovative ways to integrate the battery within the frame. 400Wh or 500Wh batteries are most common.

Control Units

All electric mountain bikes allow you to adjust the amount of power the motor delivers. This helps to help you manage the battery capacity. Control units have some kind of display that, at the very least, shows remaining battery capacity and the current power mode. Some control units feature a handlebar mounted display unit that displays additional information like estimated range and satellite navigation prompts. Many eMTBs offer Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity with smartphone apps for fine tuning the motor output and accessing more advanced features.

Groupset

An electric mountain bike’s groupset, is where the biggest difference in component quality is seen. A complete groupset comprises of the following parts:

  • Chainset (aka Crankset)
  • Bottom bracket
  • Brakes
  • Brake levers
  • Shifter
  • Derailleur
  • Chain
  • Cassette

Electric mountain bike groupset components are typically supplied by either Shimano or SRAM, sometimes with additional manufacturers like Magura, Tektro and TRP supplying brake systems. You will mostly find one-by drivetrains with a single front chainring and a wide range rear cassette.

Shimano and SRAM both produce a range of groupsets to suit different budgets. The hierarchy table here compares the different Shimano and SRAM groupsets to determine which bikes offer the best performance.

Groupset comparison - Shimano & SRAM

Wheel Size

Just like regular mountain bikes, e MTBs are available with different wheel sizes. 27.5” (650b) and 29” wheels are both available but the most common e MTB size is 27.5”+ (6fattie) that bridges the gap between the two.

MTB wheel sizes

27.5” (650b) wheels strike the ideal balance between fast rolling and nimble handling. They are lighter than 29” wheels so are faster to accelerate. On the other hand, the smaller wheel size rolls less efficiently than the larger size, making the bike more prone to losing speed over rough ground.

29” wheels roll fastest but are less nimble. These wheels are naturally smoother over rough ground but are heavier and slower to accelerate. Larger riders may find a better fit on a 29er, but smaller riders may find 29” wheels a little cumbersome.

27.5+ (6fattie) wheels feature wider 2.8” – 3.0” tyres and offer more cushioning (float) as well as more grip. With the extra size of the high-volume tyres, the overall wheel diameter is similar to a 29er, so these wheels carry speed very well on rough ground. Plus sized wheels are ideal for electric mountain bikes as they deal best with the extra weight of the motor and battery, and are great for riding more challenging terrain.

Suspension components

Electric mountain bike suspension components (i.e. the fork or rear shock absorber) are also a way to identify the quality of a bike. While Fox and RockShox are the most common manufacturers, there are a number of brands producing suspension components for mountain bikes.

Entry Level eMTBs

Entry level electric mountain bikes (up to approximately £2,500) may come supplied with a fork and rear shock supplied by SR Suntour, X-Fusion or RockShox. These components will allow a limited amount of adjustment, including:

  • Coil spring preload / air spring pressure adjustment.
  • Lockout switch.
  • Rebound damping adjustment on models towards the top of the price range.
Mid-range and enthusiast eMTBs

Mid-range and enthusiast eMTBs (up to approximately £5,000) use components from brands including Fox, RockShox and Manitou. At this level, suspension components have features like:

  • Preload adjustment / air spring pressure adjustment
  • Rebound damping adjustment
  • Lockout switch
  • Multi-position ‘mode’ switch
  • Compression damping adjustment
Top of the range eMTBs

Top of the range electric bikes (over £5,000) also use components from Fox, RockShox and Manitou, with a few select models using parts from high-end suspension brands like Ohlins. At this price, suspension components have features including:

  • Coil spring preload adjustment / air spring pressure adjustment
  • High and low speed rebound damping adjustment
  • High and low speed compression damping adjustment
  • Lockout switch
  • Multi-position ‘mode’ switch
  • Advanced low-friction coatings (e.g. Fox’s golden-coloured Kashima coating)
